Right Relationship

Our current economic system is unsustainable. Its fundamental elements, unlimited growth, and endless wealth accumulation fly in the face of the fact that the Earth's resources are clearly finite. In this work, the authors offer a comprehensive new economic model.

Tracking Down Ecological Guidance is a road map to an emerging worldview. For several centuries the effect of the industrial revolution has been to reinforce the cultural assumption that Earth is just a storehouse of raw materials for human use, and the faster these resources are exploited the better off the human species will be. This exploitive worldview is failing; it no longer provides believable guidance for the human future. The ecological worldview now emerging is focused on what kind of readaptation makes sense given what is known about how Earth's ecosystems actually work. The essays gathered in Tracking Down Ecological Guidance compose a panorama of the author's engagement with the...

The 2015 Quaker Mystics retreat was held in Richmond, Indiana at the Quaker Hill Conference Center. Eighteen Quaker mystics from twelve states and Belize met to share stories of their experiences and offer support to one another. It was an especially important time for those who were meeting with other mystics for the first time. This Second Edition was issued to include additional material that was erroneously omitted from the First Edition.

Paths of Faith in the Landscape of Science brings together the personal stories of three Quakers who have long been engaged in the dialogue between science and religion. Through all the years of antagonism between religion and science, Quakerism has had a "compass" that spared it from becoming embroiled in this conflict. Founded in mid 17th century England, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) has been guided by the concept of "continuing revelation." Quakers have never been at odds with the unfolding of scientific knowledge. Although the authors have each traveled distinct paths, their Quaker "compass" has provided essential guidance for the integration of scientific knowledge and religious experience that has stood the test of time. Paths of Faith in the Landscape of Science makes a lively contribution to the dialogue between science and religion, and to the quest for trustworthy guidance.

It's the Economy, Friends

It's the Economy, Friends is aimed at understanding the dilemma that the unremitting drive for growth creates within the limited ecosystems of Earth. While it has been prepared for use within the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), it will also be of interest and use to anyone who is seeking to understand both orthodox and ecological economics and how this growth dilemma can be resolved to better serve people and planet. -- Publisher's description.

How on Earth Do We Live Now? Natural Capital, Deep Ecology and the Commons

This pamphlet takes up the question, "how on Earth do we live now?" as both a cry of alarm and a call to action, through the lenses of "natural capital" and "deep ecology." In the course of this study, the commons emerged as a third point of reference. This study explores two essential parts of Earth's commons: property and water. It continues with a close look at systems of governance for the commons, and a new look at human nature's capacity for cooperative, collaborative action on behalf of the common good. The pamphlet concludes by considering what Quakers, and all others who place a high value on the ethics of right relationship, can bring to the task of rebuilding environmental integrity and advancing social equity at home and worldwide.

Quakers and Mysticism

This book examines the nearly 400-year tradition of Quaker engagements with mystical ideas and sources. It provides a fresh assessment of the way tradition and social context can shape a religious community while interplaying with historical and theological antecedents within the tradition. Quaker concepts such as “Meeting,” the “Light,” and embodied spirituality, have led Friends to develop an interior spirituality that intersects with extra-Quaker sources, such as those found in Jakob Boehme, Abū Bakr ibn Tufayl, the Continental Quietists, Kabbalah, Buddhist thought, and Luyia indigenous religion. Through time and across cultures, these and other conversations have shaped Quaker self-understanding and, so, expanded previous models of how religious ideas take root within a tradition. The thinkers engaged in this globally-focused, interdisciplinary volume include George Fox, James Nayler, Robert Barclay, Elizabeth Ashbridge, John Woolman, Hannah Whitall Smith, Rufus Jones, Inazo Nitobe, Howard Thurman, and Gideon W. H. Mweresa, among others.
