Staying afloat in the milk business: Borrowing and selling on credit among informal milk vendors in Nairobi

Studies on credit schemes for small-scale entrepreneurs have documented their potential to alleviate poverty and improve food security, nutrition, and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Other studies find mixed impacts of credit schemes on reducing income inequality, empowering women, and enhancing children’s education. Moreover, growing evidence finds that entrepreneurs offer credit to customers; little is known about what this practice means for entrepreneurs, and even less about gendered differences in this practice. Herein, we consider the case of final retailers in agricultural value chains and examine how male and female informal milk vendors from peri-urban Nairobi...

Who'll Pick Me?

Peri is afraid no one will pick her as a friend in her new town of Bell Buckle, where she and her father move into a dilapidated house they are turning into an inn. To make matters worse, she's always losing or forgetting things. By caring for a litter of puppies, Peri hopes to earn back her father's trust; unfortunately all she gains is trouble when things she is responsible for start to disappear. With the help of Lynn Ann, the girl who lives across the street, and Squirt, an eight-week Labrador, Peri conducts her own investigation to track down the stolen items. Could there be a burglar among the residents of Bell Buckle? More important, why is he stealing her things? During her probing into the mystery, Peri finds more than just the stolen items. She discovers the love of the people in Bell Buckle, and she finds a renewed faith in God's ability to answer seemingly impossible prayers.

Abstract: With the aim of forming a dialogic learning space on women's migration, global health, and human trafficking, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has developed the Global Health Circle of Care Course within the Study Abroad Program since 2015. The course was developed under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair on Gender, Wellbeing and a Culture of Peace and is a part of the 4W STREETS Project. It has sought to promote community participation and applied research in the educational space, as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral dialogue to analyze and act against human trafficking. This paper describes the course objectives, methodology, and results in order to offer insights into an innovative approach to instruction and knowledge creation through an arts-based, trauma-informed "patchwork education" and a pedagogy of care with survivors of trafficking as the protagonists.

Globalizing Citizens

Globalizing Citizens

Globalization has given rise to new meanings of citizenship. Just as they are tied together by global production, trade and finance, citizens in every nation are linked by the institutions of global governance, bringing new dynamics of inclusion and exclusion. For some, globalization provides a sense of solidarity that inspires them to join transnational movements to claim rights from global authorities; for others, globalization has meant greater exposure to the power of global corporations, bureaucracies and scientific experts, thus adding new layers of exclusion to already fragile meanings of citizenship. Globalizing Citizens presents expert analysis from cities and villages in India, South Africa, Nigeria, the Philippines, Kenya, the Gambia and Brazil to explore how forms of global authority shape and build new meanings and practices of citizenship, across local, national and global arenas.
