The aim of this research was to investigate the perceived impact of ICT on Zimbabwean A-level science and mathematics teachers' self-directed professional development. An analysis framework was developed through the use of grounded theory on the interview transcripts. Rainbows from the Heart tells of two young girls, very different, yet connected. Maya, Anglo and of relative affluent economic means, meets Luna, the daughter of Mexican migrant farm workers temporarily camped near Mayas home in rural Southwest Florida. In their brief encounters, Luna imparts a lifelong gift of a simple ritual passed down through the ages from ancient Mayan times. The exchange opens the eyes and heart of Maya, who realizes, almost without knowing, how spreading love and forgiveness enriches the giver. Interwoven into the story are elements of Mayan mysticism, which focuses on moving the struggle for justice beyond blame and anger to new possibilities in a non-violent way. Rainbows from the Heart transcends the material world and takes us beyond the human condition into a world of spirit. The story brings this gift back into the everyday lives of two young girls; using the power of ancient tradition to further this journey on earth we call life.

This Birding Life

This collection of essays “gives bird enthusiasts the next best thing to birdwatching, an eloquent and insightful consideration of birds and birding” (Publishers Weekly). Stephen Moss’s collection of Guardian “Birdwatch” columns forms a fascinating picture of one man’s birding life: from early coot-watching as a young boy, through teenage cycle trips to Dungeness, to adult travels around the world as a TV producer working everywhere from the Gambia to Antarctica. Drawing on nearly twenty years of columns for the Guardian, Stephen covers local, national and foreign birding encounters. From the (varying) excitement and peace of his chosen pursuit, to the growing uncertainties posed by climate change, the author brings an enthusiasm and sincerity to the subject that will energise even the most fair-weather of birdwatchers.

Vital Diplomacy

In Brazil, where forest meets savanna, new towns, agribusiness and hydroelectricity plants form a patchwork with the indigenous territories. Here, agricultural work, fishing, songs, feasts and exchanges occupy the Enawenê-nawê for eight months of each year, during a season called Yankwa. Vital Diplomacy focuses on this major ceremonial cycle to shed new light on classic Amazonian themes such as kinship, gender, manioc cultivation and cuisine, relations with non-humans and foreigners, and the interplay of myth and practice, exploring how ritual contains and diverts the threat of violence by reconciling antagonistic spirits, coordinating social and gender divides, and channelling foreign relations and resources.

Warren Zevon

Bruce Springsteen called him ‘one of the great, great American songwriters’, Jackson Browne hailed him as ‘the first and foremost proponent of song noir’ and Stephen King once said that if he could write like Zevon, he ‘would be a happy guy’. The list of artists that lined up to appear on his records include Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Dave Gilmour and Emmylou Harris. So how is it that most people, if they have heard of Warren Zevon at all, know him only as ‘that werewolves guy’? This book goes beyond that solitary hit single to examine all aspects of Zevon’s multifaceted, five-decade career, from his beginnings in the slightly psychedelic folk duo lyme and cybelle,...
