Plastids are the sites of conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy usable to sustain life. They are also responsible for the production of the vast majority of the oxygen in the atmosphere. Through these activities they play a unique role in the biosphere, producing two critical products upon which life on Earth depends. It covers in 21 chapters nearly all actively investigated areas of plastid biology, from biosynthesis to function to their uses in biotechnology. The editors have compiled an extensive list of international experts from whom to solicit chapters. As is evident from the suggested Table of Contents, the book will start with a discussion of genetic material and its expression, followed by differentiation and development of different plastid types and internal organization. This is followed by an in depth look at biogenesis and assembly of plastid proteins and protein complexes and then by the important metabolic functions in plastids. The book will end with two chapters discussing the role of plastid biology in protein expression biotechnology and in hydrogen and biofuel production.
''A wealth of information...these two volumes will be immensely valuable to anyone having to deal with this difficult group of compounds.'' ---Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, from a review of Saponins Used in Traditional and Modern Medicine and Saponins Used in Food and Agriculture
Genome science or genomics is essential to advancing knowledge in the fields of biology and medicine. Specifically, researchers learn about the molecular biology behind genetic expression in living organisms and related methods of treating human genetic diseases (including gene therapy). Advances in Genome Science is an e-book series which provides a multi-disciplinary view of some of the latest developments in genome research, allowing readers to capture the essentiality and diversity of genomics in contemporary science.
This comprehensive guide sheds new light on the benefits of FDG PET/CT in diagnosing inflammatory diseases. Although FDG PET/CT offers an invaluable tool for diagnosing inflammatory diseases, the clinical evidence on its application remains limited. To remedy this gap, each chapter of this book includes detailed descriptions of how FDG PET/CT can be used in connection with a specific inflammatory disease. Further, the authors discusses the precise clinical presentation, including key images and their interpretation, techniques and diagnosis. As such, it allows readers to see for themselves how valuable FDG PET/CT is for the diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis and aortitis syndrome, as well as rheumatic diseases and neuroimflammation, and the detection of the disease focus of inflammation or fever of unknown origin. Given its scope, this excellent collection is a valuable resource for radiologists and physicians who are involved in nuclear medicine, as well as cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and rheumatologists.
This book provides up-to-date information and practical approaches to Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) programs for digestive and / or cardiopulmonary surgery. ERAS programs following surgical interventions are now part of the standard of care for patients undergoing various operative procedures. These programs have been associated with reductions in complications, in length of hospital stay after surgery and in related costs, and have led to improved patient QOL. Enhanced Recovery after Surgery discusses a range of aspects of the program, from surgical procedure to perioperative management. Each chapter is written by experts in the field, including digestive, cardiopulmonary and pediatric surgeons. It is a valuable resource for surgeons, nurses and administrators interested in initiating an ERAS program.
This book reviews the medical aspects (epidemiological, anatomopathological, clinical, morphological and therapeutic) of bilio-pancreatic malformations in adults. The ductal anomalies discussed are: cystic dilation of the bile ducts, bilio-pancreatic maljunction, pancreas divisum, the annular pancreas, the dorsal agenesis of the pancreas and the ansa pancreatica. This manuscript comprises a wide literature review, as well as original schematic figures and illustrations.
This book is a volume in the Penn Press Anniversary Collection. To mark its 125th anniversary in 2015, the University of Pennsylvania Press rereleased more than 1,100 titles from Penn Press's distinguished backlist from 1899-1999 that had fallen out of print. Spanning an entire century, the Anniversary Collection offers peer-reviewed scholarship in a wide range of subject areas.
