Understanding Religious Abuse and Recovery

Understanding Religious Abuse and Recovery

Currently there are at least four major, identifiable perspectives on how people best understand and recover from religious abuse. Both secular and faith-based (Christian) adherents can be variously identified in each of these approaches. This book examines these viewpoints and evaluates their various strengths and limitations. It concludes that each perspective is helpful to the extent possible, given the limitations of its respective philosophic or theological assumptions. This book summarizes each viewpoint and suggests a larger contextual perspective, helpful to better understand involvement in and recovery from religiously abusive environments. The conclusion is an integration of the various conceptual frameworks, and a different model (SECURE) is described that includes essential principles and practical strategies necessary for recovery from religious abuse. Suggestions are made for future research and study both for academics with interest in the cultic studies and counseling fields, and for various people negatively affected by religious abuse and in need of recovery.

The Incarnate Christ and His Critics

A current, comprehensive, and clear defense of the deity of Christ. The central theological claim of Christianity, that Jesus is God incarnate, finds eager detractors across a wide spectrum--from scholars who interpret Jesus as a prophet, angel, or guru to adherents of progressive Christianity and non-Christian religions and philosophies. Yet thorough biblical scholarship strongly supports the historic Christian teaching on the deity of Christ. Authors Robert M. Bowman Jr. and J. Ed Komoszewski follow the approach of their landmark 2007 study on the same topic, Putting Jesus in His Place. They focus on five pillars of New Testament teaching, using the acronym HANDS, and demonstrate what both...

Of all the anomalous phenomenon reported, ghost sightings are by far the most common. The words "ghost" and "spirit" are used interchangeably in American English but in other cultures the lingering souls of the departed are not to be confused with ancestral spirits, demonic spirits, numens or poltergeists. This encyclopedia lists hundreds of entities of the spirit realm--from aatxe to zuzeca--from world mythology and folklore.

False religions abound in the US and beyond, and Christians need information they can trust. Since the 1960s, The Kingdom of the Cults has been a trustworthy, well-researched resource on this topic for pastors, lay leaders, and other Christians. The Kingdom of the Cults Handbook takes that same, reliable information and pares it down into a more concise and simplified format. It's perfect for everyone from Christian teachers and ministry leaders to those who just want to better understand the religion of their neighbors. Islam

An essential and succinct introduction to the culture, history, and practices of the world's second largest religion. Next to Christianity, Islam is the largest religion in the world. One out of every six people in the world is Muslim. Like Christianity, it's monotheistic (belief in one God), it has a holy text, and an ethical or religious law. Like Christians, Muslims are devoted to religious activities like prayer and fasting. And yet, many Christians feel at a loss to understand this neighboring system of faith. Professor James A. Beverley provides answers to questions many Christians have about Islam in this short and readable book. Islam clearly lays out responses to topics such as: What Muslims think about God, the world, and their place in it. How Muhammad established a religion that now stretches around the world. How different groups within Islam define Jihad. Why Palestine is important to Muslims. What roles women play in different Islamic communities. And how Christians should relate to Muslims. Features include: Glossary of terms related to Islam A list of Frequently Asked Questions for easy reference Topical bibliography for further study
