Migrant Media

This study of media and migrant communities in Germany’s capital city is a “model of clarity and rigor in its arguments” (Martin Stokes, University of Chicago). In this innovative and thought-provoking study, Kira Kosnick explores the landscape of Turkish-language broadcasting in Berlin. From twenty-four-hour radio broadcasting in Turkish to programming on Germany’s national public broadcasting and local public access channels, Germany’s largest immigrant minority has made its presence felt in German media. Satellite dishes have appeared in migrant neighborhoods all over the city, giving viewers access to Kurdish channels and broadcasts from Turkey. Kosnick draws on interviews with producers, her own participation in production work, and analysis of programs to elaborate a new approach to “migrant media” in relation to the larger cultural and political spaces through which immigrant life is imagined and created.

Understanding the Human Fibrotic Diseases’ Genomics & Uncontrolled Wound Healing Response to Injury at Molecular Level.

"Understanding the Human Fibrotic Diseases’ Genomics & Uncontrolled Wound Healing Response to Injury at Molecular Level." Fibrotic disorders are implicated in nearly 45% of all deaths in the developed world. Pathological fibrogenesis is associated with an uncontrolled wound healing response to injury in which tissue is replaced by deposition of excess extracellular matrix, leading to fibrosis and loss of organ function. Classically, disease-specific triggers initiate site-specific injuries, which activate distinct cells that drive fibrosis in genetically susceptible individuals. A plethora of genome-wide association studies, microarrays, exome sequencing studies, DNA methylation arrays,...

Gliding Mammals of the World

The world's gliding mammals are an extraordinary group of animals that have the ability to glide from tree to tree with seemingly effortless grace. There are more than 60 species of gliding mammals including the flying squirrels from Asia, Europe and North America, the scaly-tailed flying squirrels from central Africa and the gliding possums of Australia and New Guinea. But the most spectacular of all are the colugos – or so called flying lemurs – that occur throughout South-East Asia and the Philippines. Animals that glide from tree to tree descend at an angle of less than 45 degrees to the horizontal, while those that parachute descend at an angle greater than 45 degrees. Gliding is ac...

A Place More Void

A Place More Void takes its name from a scene in William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, wherein an elderly soothsayer has a final chance to warn Caesar about the Ides of March. Worried that he won't be able to deliver his message because of the crowded alleyways, the soothsayer devises a plan to find and intercept Caesar in "a place more void." It is precisely such an elusive place that this volume makes space for by theorizing and empirically exploring the many yet widely neglected ways in which the void permeates geographical thinking. This collection presents geography's most in-depth and sustained engagements with the void to date, demonstrating the extent to which related t...

Foamy Viruses

The aberrant replication pathway of foamy viruses distinguishes them from all other retroviruses. Many details have been accumulated over the past ten or so years. Most of the findings on foamy viruses were obtained by research on a single virus isolate previously called "human foamy virus", which appeared to be the first to be investigated on a molecular level. However, to the editor's knowledge, genuine human foamy viruses do not exist, but several trans-species transmissions of different simian foamy viruses from monkeys and apes to human hosts.
