This thesis contains new research in both experimental and theoretical particle physics, making important contributions in each. Two analyses of collision data from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented, as well as two phenomenological studies of heavy coloured resonances that could be produced at the LHC. The first data analysis was the measurement of top quark-antiquark production with a veto on additional jet activity. As the first detector-corrected measurement of jet activity in top-antitop events it played an important role in constraining the theoretical modelling, and ultimately reduced these uncertainties for ATLAS's other top-quark measurements by a factor of two. The secon...
Far from the nonsense of typical agony aunts, this relationship advice will be based on science: using extensive scientific fieldwork from psychology and sociology journals as well as other serious research, Dr. Luisa Dillner gives you the right answers to those often recurring questions: what are the chances of making a long distance relationship work? How can I get my boyfriend to stop flirting? Is your relationship better if you don't argue? In this essential book about love, women will finally get some intelligent information about relationships and men will get the facts and figures they have always been curious about but never knew they could find. The book is divided into each stage of a relationship, from dating to parenthood and beyond, and its easily readable question and answer format makes it perfect material for the bedside table.
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth, including the tongue and lips. Symptoms include a sore or ulcer that does not heal after three or more weeks. Accurate and rapid diagnosis can help in extending survival and preventing the progression of disease. This book is a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer. Divided into 36 sections, the text begins with an overview of the surgical anatomy of oral cavities, epidemiology, prevention, pathology, and staging of oral cancer, then imaging techniques. The following chapters examine the management of numerous different forms of oral cancer, concluding with a case presentation and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. The extensive text is highly illustrated with clinical photographs, diagrams and tables.
This book gathers peer-reviewed papers presented at the 18th International Conference on Geometry and Graphics (ICGG), held in Milan, Italy, on August 3-7, 2018. The spectrum of papers ranges from theoretical research to applications, including education, in several fields of science, technology and the arts. The ICGG 2018 mainly focused on the following topics and subtopics: Theoretical Graphics and Geometry (Geometry of Curves and Surfaces, Kinematic and Descriptive Geometry, Computer Aided Geometric Design), Applied Geometry and Graphics (Modeling of Objects, Phenomena and Processes, Applications of Geometry in Engineering, Art and Architecture, Computer Animation and Games, Graphic Simul...
This first volume provides invaluable insights into the strategies employed by organizations as they navigate the complexities of our time, including a focus on new technology and AI.
The book is a collection of high-quality peer-reviewed research papers presented in the first International Conference on International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Evolutionary Computations in Engineering Systems (ICAIECES -2015) held at Velammal Engineering College (VEC), Chennai, India during 22 – 23 April 2015. The book discusses wide variety of industrial, engineering and scientific applications of the emerging techniques. Researchers from academic and industry present their original work and exchange ideas, information, techniques and applications in the field of Communication, Computing and Power Technologies.
A behind-the-scenes history of computer graphics, featuring a cast of math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video game players, and studio executives. Computer graphics (or CG) has changed the way we experience the art of moving images. Computer graphics is the difference between Steamboat Willie and Buzz Lightyear, between ping pong and PONG. It began in 1963 when an MIT graduate student named Ivan Sutherland created Sketchpad, the first true computer animation program. Sutherland noted: “Since motion can be put into Sketchpad drawings, it might be exciting to try making cartoons.” This book, the first full-length history of CG, shows us how Sutherland's seemingly offhand idea grew into a multibillion dollar industry. In Moving Innovation, Tom Sito—himself an animator and industry insider for more than thirty years—describes the evolution of CG. His story features a memorable cast of characters—math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video game enthusiasts, and studio executives: disparate types united by a common vision. Sito shows us how fifty years of work by this motley crew made movies like Toy Story and Avatar possible.
This book examines the emergence of modern company towns in Iran by delineating the architectural, political, and industrial histories of three distinct resource-based ‘company town’ projects built in association with the ‘Big Three’ powers of World War II. The book’s narrative builds upon a tripartite research design that chronologically traces the formation and development of the oil, steel, and copper industries, respectively favoured by Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States in this part of the world. By applying three sets of comparative studies, the book provides critical vantage points to three different ideological design paradigms: postcolonial regionalism,...
