Chinese Merger Control Law
On 1 August 2008 the Chinese Anti-Monopoly Law entered into force, introducing a comprehensive framework for competition law to the Chinese market. One set of the new rules pertains to merger control. China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) was nominated as the authority responsible for enforcing merger control in China and has been actively doing so ever since. Recent years have established China as one of the most important merger filing jurisdictions for cross-border mergers alongside the EU and USA. This work evaluates the Chinese merger control law regime and MOFCOM’s decision-making practice after more than five years of application. In particular, it assesses which policy goals (competition policy goals or industrial policy considerations) prevail in the written law and its application and provides suggestions for a further improvement of the law – with the aim to develop a transparent merger control regime that promotes long-term economic growth in China.

Is It a House?
Prehistoric houses on the Northwest Coast were built from wood, often within piles of discarded shells, leaving little archaeological evidence from which to confirm their presence. Is It a House? uses multiple lines of evidence to investigate whether the U-shaped depression surrounded by shells at the English Camp site on San Juan Island was originally a house constructed by native peoples. Each chapter addresses a different kind of evidence, including artifacts, sediment, faunal remains, and stratigraphy. The quantitative and qualitative analyses used to examine the evidence reveal new directions and insights for identifying houses in similar contexts. The editors introduce the research in the context of current and past Gulf of Georgia (Coast Salish) archaeology, and end by synthesizing the research evidence.

Chiefly, a record of descendants of John Hegarty and Abigail (Abegail) O'Keeffe. John was born in Ireland in 1798 and was married on 11 Feb. 1823 at the age of 25. John was the son of Peter Hegarty and Ellen Maloney. Abigail was born in 1799 and married John at the age of 24, in the village of Tallow, County of Waterford, Ireland in a Catholic church. They had at least 8 children. In 1852, they emigrated to Ontario, Canada. John died in 1877. Abigail died in 1879. Both were buried in a Catholic cemetery in Mitchell, Ontario, Canada. Descendants lived in Canada and elsewhere.
