The Case of Paul Kammerer

The case of Paul Kammerer is a well researched and highly readable historical account of one of the biggest, till today unsolved scientific scandals. Paul Kammerer, 'the father of epigenetic, ' was a talented and idealistic biologist, whose ground-breaking research made headlines worldwide. Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, where Kammerer lived and worked, was at its creative peak yet already declining toward Nazism. The book that reads like a detective story, provides new evidence for the events that led to Kammerer's tragic end while exposing the implicit yet dangerous links between science and politics. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: With a background in the sociology of science, political science and philosophy, Klaus Taschwer lives in Vienna and is the science editor of the Austrian newspaper Der Standard. He is the founding editor of the science magazine heureka!, the co-author of Konrad Lorenz. A Biography and recipient of the 2016 Austrian State Award for Scientific Journalism.

English summary: The Institute for Experimental Biology (Biologische Versuchsanstalt, or BVA) in the Vienna Prater was one of the world's leading research institutes for experimental biology until the Anschluss of Austria in 1938. The Austrian Academy of Sciences, which was given the BVA in 1914, organised several events in 2014 and 2015 to commemorate Austria's first privately founded research institute and its groundbreaking findings. This catalogue documents the turbulent history of this unique institute and its retrieval to collective memory. Konrad Lorenz

My Brother's Keeper

In My Brother's Keeper: A Memoir and a Message, one of America's most admired public figures tells the story of his life. Born in Germany in 1929, Amitai Etzioni escaped the Nazi regime and as a teenager dropped out of high school to fight as a commando in the Israeli War of Independence. He went on to earn his doctorate at Berkeley, teach at Columbia University and Harvard Business School, and serve as senior advisor to the Carter White House. Although he has authored or edited over 20 books, Dr. Etzioni's influence extends beyond academic circles as the founder of the communitarian social movement. In his own words, Dr. Etzioni reflects on his vision of a society whose members care profoundly about one another, assume responsibilities and do not just demand rights, and attend not merely to themselves, but also to the common good. He traces how this message spread and is playing a significant role in the public life of the United States, United Kingdom, and many other free and liberated societies. Clearly and engagingly written, Dr. Etzioni's vision and story are at once compelling and inspiring.

World War I marks a huge break in Central European Jewish history. Not only had the violent wartime events destroyed Jewish life and especially the living space of Eastern European Jews, but the impacts of war, the geopolitical change and a radicalization of anti-Semitism also led to a crisis of Jewish identity. Furthermore, during the process of national self-discovery and the establishing of new states the societal position of the Jews and their relationship to the state had to be redefined. These partially violent processes, which were always accompanied by anti-Semitism, evoked Jewish and Gentile debates, in which questions about Jewish loyalty to the old and/or new states as well as concepts of Jewish identity under the new political circumstances were negotiated. This volume collects articles dealing with these Jewish and gentile debates about military service and war memory in Central Europe.

A charismatic naturalist, bird-watcher, teacher, artist, photographer, film-maker, and winner of the Nobel Prize, Niko Tinbergen was a prominent and influential scientist. Jointly with Konrad Lorenz, he laid the foundation for a new science, the biological study of animal behaviour. 'Ethology', and his talent for devising behaviour-testing experiments, provided an outlet for Niko's enthusiasm for gulls and sticklebacks, snow-buntings and foxes, wasps and falcons, and even children. This first full-length biography of Niko Tinbergen, lavishly illustrated with many of Niko's own drawings, describes his background in Holland, a naturalists' paradise, and the beginnings of his investigations int...
