On Loyalty and Loyalties

An examination of the nature and virtuousness of loyalty and of some of its primary associations: friends, families, organizations, professions, nations, countries (patriotism), and religion (absolute loyalty). Loyalty is distinguished from its cognates and contrasts, its role in human associative life is articulated, and its status as a virtue is defended. The particularist-universalist debate is addressed, the idea of a loyal opposition explored, and its limits defined.

Why do we have bodies? When it comes to thinking about our bodies, confusion reigns. In our secular age, there has been a loss of the body's goodness, purpose, and end. Many people, driven by shame and idolatry, abuse their body through self-harm or self-improvement. How can we renew our understanding and see our bodies the way God does? In Wonderfully Made, John Kleinig forms a properly biblical theology of our bodies. Through his keen sensitivity to Scripture's witness, Kleinig explains why bodies matter. While sin has corrupted our bodies and how we think of them, God's creation is still good. Thus, our bodies are good gifts. The Son took on a body to redeem our bodies. Kleinig addresses issues like shame, chastity, desire, gender dysphoria, and more, by integrating them into the biblical vision of creation. Readers of Wonderfully Made will not only be equipped to engage in current issues; they will gain a robust theology of the body and better appreciation of God's very good creation.

In 1948 Paul Karrer and Ernst Jucker compiled the first comprehensive book on the topic of carotenoids. Their work included a list of 65 natural carotenoids with known and unknown structures. In Otto Isler's 'Carotenoids' which appeared in 1971, Otto Straub published a new and expanded 'List of Natural Carotenoids' comprised of 273 compounds and included all the literature data known at the time. This list proved to be of such value to those working in the field of carote noids that 5 years later Otto Straub came out with an up dated version ofthelist entitled 'Key to Carotenoids'. The present second edition of 'Key to Carotenoids' endeavors to provide the reader with the continuation of Straub's work. I would like to thank my collaborators for their work and especially Birkhäuser Verlag, Basle, for their support. H.P. Annotation. Patrick Miller is widely known as an educator, editor, President of the Society of Biblical Literature, and academic who is concerned to ensure that academics and the life of the church are not torn asunder in this era of fragmentation. This volume honors him for his life's work, presenting 24 essays by students and colleagues on themes dear to Miller: (1) the Psalms and God's nearness to his people, and (2) Torah (Deuteronomy, in particular) and God's connection with his people in their lives together.

Policing is a highly pragmatic occupation. It is designed to achieve the important social ends of peacekeeping and public safety, and is empowered to do so using means that are ordinarily seen as problematic; that is, the use of force, deception, and invasions of privacy, along with considerable discretion. It is often suggested that the ends of policing justify the use of otherwise problematic means, but do they? This book explores this question from a philosophical perspective. The relationship between ends and means has a long and contested history both in moral/practical reasoning and public policy. Looking at this history through the lens of policing, criminal justice philosopher John K...

The Sword and the Mask

Is spiritual warfare real? Is it just a metaphor for social justice? Do territorial spirits have a stranglehold on the planet? What does the Christian do with the rising fascination with the supernatural in Western culture? Does any of this matter for daily life? With meticulous care, Jon Furgeson dives into the sea of perspectives and voices in the church and Western culture, bringing the reader on a journey to gain perspective. After clearing the clutter and the confusion, he presents a bold new, yet faithful, way to understand spiritual warfare, to see how it affects every person to the foundations of who they are and how the Spirit of God in Christ acts in the midst of the fallen powers to take broken sinners and turn them into antifragile saints.
