Mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang diharapkan mampu membantu peserta didik memiliki kemampuan serta keterampilan sesuai harapan apabila proses pembelajaran yang dilakukan tepat. Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing memang bukanlah hal yang mudah untuk dipelajari. Hal ini disebabkan karena peserta didik berusaha untuk mengetahui, mengenal, memahami bahasa yang tidak dipergunakan sehari-hari (linguafranca). Ada empat kemampuan yang diajarkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yakni, menyimak (listening), berbicara (speaking), membaca (reading), dan menulis (writing). Dalam proses belajar mengajar guru menjadi pemeran utama dalam menciptakan situasi interaktif yang edukatif, yakni interaksi antara guru dengan siswa, siswa dengan siswa dan dengan sumber pembelajaran dalam menunjang tercapainya tujuan belajar.
