This volume presents articles on the modern Armenian diaspora in post-socialist Europe, including the Baltic States, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. Specialists from the fields of cultural anthropology, sociology, and area studies offer their insights into current developments of Armenian communities which, although located within common post-socialist time-space, differ from one another significantly in terms of their historical background, identity politics, and socio-cultural characteristics.
Armenian Christianity Today examines contemporary religious life and the social, political, and cultural functions of religion in the post-Soviet Republic of Armenia and in the Armenian Diaspora worldwide. Scholars from a range of countries and disciplines explore current trends and everyday religiosity, particularly within the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), and amongst Armenian Catholics, Protestants and vernacular religions. Themes examined include: Armenian grass-roots religiosity; the changing forms of regular worship and devotion; various types of congregational life; and the dynamics of social composition of both the clergy and lay believers. Exploring through the lens of Armenia, this book considers wider implications of ’postsecular’ trends in the role of global religion.
The 101st Cavalry was a New York National Guard unit that spent the final months of World War II doing reconnaissance for the U.S. 7th Army. They crossed the Saar River in March, and were closing in on Innsbruck, Austria, when the war ended. Attached at various times to, among others, the 4th Infantry Division, the 63rd Infantry Division, the 12th Armored Division, and the 101st Airborne, the 101st Cavalry found a series of concentration camps in the woods near Landsberg and liberated Oflag VIIA, a prisoner of war camp for Polish officers near Murnau. When Melaney Welch Moisan set out in 2004 to find out what her father had done in World War II, she discovered that many other men in the 101st had stories of their own to tell. This book is the story of her journey to connect with her father's past. It is also the story the men who served in the 101st Cavalry, and others whose lives they touched during those few months of the war. More than 100 photos and 17 maps.

This volume explores intergenerational trauma among refugee communities displaced throughout the world. One hardly known but fascinating aspect of the Cold War was the use of the holy Virgin Mary as a warrior against atheist ideologies. Ties to the homeland have always been a central focus of global diaspora and migration studies. How and why do the descendants of migrants maintain their attachment to the ancestral homeland? To what extent do emotional ties bind second and later generations of migrants to that place? Tsypylma Darieva examines various actors, channels and sites of transnational Armenian engagement that generate new pathways of diasporic ›roots‹ mobility.
