Mediatizing Secular State

Mediatizing Secular State

The book provides an empirically based analysis of changes on how various political and denominational actors seek to influence the Church and state relationship, as well as how we understand the idea of the secular state. A set of case studies shows how and why changes in the coverage of the secular state and Church-state relations have followed the dynamics of media logic. By establishing a grounded theory based on media content, legal regulations and political party programs in the years 1989-2015 as well as a current survey, the author throws new light on the theory of mediatization. The book demonstrates that the disseminated idea of the secular state is largely a result of the adaptation of both political and religious representatives to a dynamically changing media logic. "The book is the first study of this kind showing the Polish perspective. It is an interesting and important source of information for those who want to trace the media picture of relations between the Polish state and the institution of the Roman Catholic Church, representing the largest religious community in Poland." Professor Dorota Piontek, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań

La 4e de couverture indique : "Dorota Sajewska proposes an innovative perspective for looking back at the formative process of Polish modernity, and delves into repressed areas of experience connected with World War I and the ensuing emancipatory movements. The book shows that underpinning modern Polish nationhood, is both a romantic myth of independence and a horror of fratricidal war. Searching for traces of memory in precarious bodies inflicted with the violence of war, Necroperformance asks us to acknowledge the fragility of life as it actively reinforces an attitude of respect for the right to live. Sajewska's chief objective is to understand the social impact of remains - of the abject body (dead, wounded, disfigured, despoiled by violence) - its place in culture and its agency. These are remains like the body of Rosa Luxemburg, which opens the book's narrative - a woman, a Jew, a Polish-German communist activist who was imprisoned, persecuted, murdered, and desecrated after death. This alternative archive becomes a basis for thought on a new anthropology rooted in the experience of the Great War and recorded in the formule of modern theatre."

Student Politics in Communist Poland

Student Politics in Communist Poland tackles the topic of student political activity under a communist regime during the Cold War. It discusses both the communist student organizations as well as oppositional, independent, and apolitical student activism during the forty-five-year period of Poland's existence as a Soviet satellite state. The book focuses on consecutive generations of students who felt compelled to act on behalf of their milieu or for what they saw as the greater national good. The dynamics between moderates and radicals, between conformists and non-conformists are analyzed from the points of view of the protagonists themselves. The book traces ideological evolutions, but als...

Winner of the Europe Book Prize One of Europe’s most preeminent investigative journalists travels to the Czech Republic—the Czech half of the former Czechoslovakia, the land that brought us Kafka—to explore the surreal fictions and the extraordinary reality of its twentieth century. For example, there’s the story of the small businessman who adopted Henry Ford’s ideas on productivity to create the world’s largest shoe company—and hired modernist giants such as Le Corbusier to design his company towns (which were also the birthplaces of Ivana Trump and Tom Stoppard). Or the story of Kafka’s niece, who loaned her name to writers blacklisted under the Communist regime so they co...

Physics of Organic Semiconductors

Filling the gap in the literature currently available, this book presents an overview of our knowledge of the physics behind organic semiconductor devices. Contributions from 18 international research groups cover various aspects of this field, ranging from the growth of organic layers and crystals, their electronic properties at interfaces, their photophysics and electrical transport properties to the application of these materials in such different devices as organic field-effect transistors, photovoltaic cells and organic light-emitting diodes. From the contents: * Excitation Dynamics in Organic Semiconductors * Organic Field-Effect Transistors * Spectroscopy of Organic Semiconductors * Interfaces between Organic Semiconductors and Metals * Analysis and Modeling of Devices * Exciton Formation and Energy Transfer in Organic Light Emitting Diodes * Deposition and Characterization
