Submarine canyons are some of the most prominent features of the world’s continental margins creating heterogeneity in the terrain, influencing local and global hydrodynamics and often creating hotspots of biodiversity, both on the seafloor and in the water column. Canyon morphology and location on the margin make them the main conduits between the shelf and the deep sea, focussing the transport of sediments, organic matter, nutrients, and increasingly pollutants and litter. They represent dynamic systems in which numerous processes shape the environment and result in impacting the utilization and hazard potentials for humans. These processes are influenced by a variety of steering mechanisms, from mountain building and climate on the land to tectonics and sea-level fluctuations in ocean margins.
