A sexy blacksmith. A CEO turned innkeeper. A haunted speakeasy. And a desperate killer… Welcome to Wicks Hollow: a cozy town near Lake Michigan filled with quaint houses, eccentric residents, and more than its share of ghosts, murders, and sexy romance. Leslie Nakano needs to make a major life change—getting away from the dog-eat-dog corporate world, as well as getting past a personal loss—so she buys a large turn-of-the-century mansion in Wicks Hollow, with plans to renovate it and turn it into an inn. She doesn’t care about the rumors that it’s haunted—she just wants a new life. But she sure wouldn’t mind finding the missing gems that belonged to Red Eye Sal, a bootlegger who...
By developing the concept of the "digital effects emblem," Kristen Whissel contributes a new analytic rubric to cinema studies. An "effects emblem" is a spectacular, computer-generated visual effect that gives stunning expression to a film's key themes. Although they elicit feelings of astonishment and wonder, effects emblems do not interrupt narrative, but are continuous with story and characterization and highlight the narrative stakes of a film. Focusing on spectacular digital visual effects in live-action films made between 1989 and 2011, Whissel identifies and examines four effects emblems: the illusion of gravity-defying vertical movement, massive digital multitudes or "swarms," photorealistic digital creatures, and morphing "plasmatic" figures. Across films such as Avatar, The Matrix, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park, Titanic, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, these effects emblems heighten the narrative drama by contrasting power with powerlessness, life with death, freedom with constraint, and the individual with the collective.
The author received the phone call that no parent wants, informing her of the tragic accident involving her children; and in an instant life was forever changed. She opens up her heart and her journals to share the journey of grief and the foundation of her ongoing hope. This book speaks to a twofold audience - those in deep grief, and those who walk alongside, desiring to comfort in truly meaningful ways, but often not knowing how. By allowing the reader into her heart and head, she shows how a simple question or an unthinking comment can cause further stress and pain. Both griever and comforter will be deeply affected and encouraged by this raw, honest response to personal crippling grief. This book encourages all to sing a new song with God's help, no matter what we face in life....
This collection centres the diverse narrative experiences of six early-career US teachers who identify as critically reflective practitioners. The contributors cogently demonstrate how teachers with critically reflective mindsets take active steps to ensure that they are cognizant of how their intersecting social identities impact how they arrive at making different types of decisions (big and small), interact with students from varied backgrounds, and negotiate competing demands and expectations in and out of their classrooms. The contributors have carefully thought about how learning and teaching are complex processes that involve significant ethical, moral, and social responsibilities. Wh...
What really goes on behind the scenes in the mysterious world of community theatre? Dreamcast is a look at the most underpaid volunteers on the planet, those who serve the muse of live theatre in the small towns and suburbs of America. A local amateur production of "The Sound of Music" unleashes vengeful nuns, a Korean beer connoisseur, a randy director, a flamboyant choreographer, an obsessive stalker, a brat who knows all the songs from "Wicked" and a pot-smoker who lives in a public bathroom. Love/life, comedy/drama, mayhem, backstage drama and onstage triumph are all here for the price of admission to Dreamcast. This is my first novel and it is on a subject very dear to my heart. I have been doing community theatre since the age of 9. Why do I keep doing it? I don't get paid, in fact it costs me money. The glory is fleeting and the hours are awful. I wrote this book in part to answer that question.
