Regions in Central Europe
The subjective term region and its theoretical implications are considered in the opening chapters of this text. The empirical section ranges in time from the appearance of the German stern duchies in the Middle Ages to cross-border co-operation in the Oder are today, and geographically from Baden-Wurttemberg in the west to Transylvania, Carpatho-Ruthenia and the Kalingrad enclave in the east. The contributors to the text highlight the complex problems of local identity and the centrality of culture in shaping notions of the region.

Ideology and Rationality in the Soviet Model
First published in 1989, Ideology and Rationality in the Soviet Model assumes that since the October Revolution the development of the Soviet Union has essentially been a process of trial and error. Economic rationality has been sacrificed to political expedients, and the cultural sphere has been put to use as a legitimating and rationalizing device. This book analyses the internal logic of this process from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution to Gorbachev’s ‘revolution from above’, including coverage of the Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras. The book focuses on the structural determinants of the Soviet Model, thus seeking to reveal the specific rationalities that characterizes ‘Soviet man’. Its conclusion casts serious doubt on the likelihood of new policies defeating seven decades of Bolshevik rule and social indoctrination. It will be of interest to students of economics, political science and history.

Historicizing the Uses of the Past
This book presents new developments in Scandinavian memory cultures related to World War II and the Holocaust by combining this focus with the perspective of history didactics. The theoretical framework of historical consciousness offers an approach linking individual and collective uses and re-uses of the past to the question how history can and should be taught. It also offers some examples of good practice in this field. The book promotes a teaching practice which, in taking the social constructivist notions of historical consciousness as a starting point, can contribute to self-reflecting and critical thinking - being fundamental for any democratic political culture.
