Community Garden for Lonely Girls
Poetry. Christine Shan Shan Hou's newest collection of poems, COMMUNITY GARDEN FOR LONELY GIRLS depicts a journey that traverses imagined histories and various states of consciousness. In Hou's poems, "the now moves with such glacial intensity"--folkloric myth and cultural detail are weaved together in animated modulation. These poems assert that desire for the unknown is pertinent to understanding one's identity and survival: "I know I could die, but if / I could be anything // I would be an aquarium full of / colorful fish and deep // breathing, / You know // like nude and / without age." Like a feminist spiritual quest or the act of a messenger delivering consequential information to a participant community, Hou's poems shape shift while simultaneously evoking its changeability: "I open my legs and a saint comes out / like a tiny blessing." The New World
A hybrid collection of poetry and prose, The New World follows the attempts, failures, and re-attempts at understanding and articulating an era of immense social upheaval, political corruption, and environmental consequence. In five distinct sections, the book refracts, explores and investigates these global themes through the realm of the personal and private. Old journals and notes are revisited as a way of understanding the self and its various revisions and mistakes. The New World tells the story of escapism and arrival, growth and decay, and despair and optimism as they occur, often simultaneously, within the mind of our narrator. The book asks, "How do you write poems in a country like this?", inviting every reader to take stock of themselves, and to reassess the ways "One human world / [empties] completely / into the bigger one."
Beautiful and Useless
In Beautiful and Useless, Kim Min Jeong exposes the often funny and contradictory rifts that appear in the language of everyday circumstance. She uses slang, puns, cultural referents, and 'naughty, unwomanly" language in order to challenge readers to expand their ideas of not only what a poem is, but also how women should speak. In this way Kim undermines patriarchal authority by displaying the absurd nature of gender expectations. But even larger than issues of gender, these poems reveal the illogical systems of power behind the apparent structures that govern the logic of everyday life. By making the source of these antagonisms and gender transgressions visible, they make them less powerful. This skillful translation from Soeun Seo and Jake Levine, brings the full playfulness and intelligence of Kim's lyricism to English-language readers.
