Vitamins and Minerals after Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is a complex, chronic disease that increases the risk of other serious medical conditions. Bariatric surgery provides long-term weight loss and remission of obesity-related comorbidities. Currently, about 1% of the Swedish population have undergone bariatric surgery. A side effect of the bariatric operations is an increased risk of micronutrient deficiencies, which can lead to nutritional complications, including anemia. Therefore, a lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is recommended. This thesis aims to assess real-world use of vitamin and mineral supplements after bariatric surgery with a particular focus on adherence and patterns of biochemical deficiencies. Study I is a ...

Maternal obesity, duration of labor and the role of leptin

Maternal obesity, duration of labor and the role of leptin

Background: The prevalence of obesity substantially increases in pregnant women. Maternal obesity is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The increased risk for cesarean section present in obese women has been related to potential impaired uterine contractility. The mechanism that underlies this theory is not clear. In vitro studies have shown that leptin, produced by adipose tissue and the placenta, exerts an inhibitory effect on myometrial contractility. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the labor process in relation to maternal body mass index (BMI) and the clinical role of leptin in this process. Material and Methods: Studies I-IV are cohort studies. The first two...

Drug use during pregnancy with focus on antidepressants

Background: More than half of pregnant women use at least one prescribed medication during pregnancy, and almost all pregnant women use some kind of over-the-counter medication. Depression is one of the most common diseases in the world today, also during the peripartum period. The prevalence of pregnant women using antidepressant medication is increasing. General knowledge about the use of medication during pregnancy needs to improve. The overall aim of the studies on which this thesis is based is therefore to examine different aspects of medication use during pregnancy, with a focus on antidepressants. Material and methods: Study I was a questionnaire study where 850 pregnant women were as...

Postpartum infections; prevalence, associated obstetric factors and the role of vitamin D

Background: Postpartum infections are a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Breast infection, endometritis, urinary tract infection and wound infections are the most common postpartum infections and together they affect almost 20% of women after childbirth. Some risk factors for postpartum infections, for example cesarean section, have been relatively well studied, but other presumable risk factors are yet to be confirmed. The proportion of pregnant women who are overweight or obese is increasing in most parts of the world. Increased maternal body mass index (BMI) is associated with maternal and infant morbidity. The association between overweight / obesity and postpar...

Not long ago, it was assumed that coronary heart disease mainly--or only--affected men. Now that CHD is recognized as a leading killer of women as well as men, numerous research studies have been made of its diverse presentations in women, causal factors, and possibilities for prevention and treatment. The expert contributions to Psychosocial Stress and Cardiovascular Disease in Women span the results of this cross-disciplinary awareness. This progressive resource takes a three-dimensional approach to its subject, focusing on epidemiology and risk factors for heart disease in women, the psycho- and neurobiology of stress and coronary disease, and promising clinical interventions. Chapters id...
