Preface Childhood is the topic of the ninth World Glaucoma Association Consensus. There has been only sparse attention to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood glaucoma. Both pediatric ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists provide care for such children. In some instances, they manage these individuals alone and, in others, the management is shared. Current Developments in Glaucoma Surgery and MIGS
Successful interventional glaucoma remains a sought-after goal for the glaucoma clinician for many reasons. Medical costs, compliance, and adherence remain major barriers for the treatment of our patients. A truly definitive treatment for glaucoma is most likely to be largely surgical, as it is doubtful that patients will continue to use glaucoma drugs in the future for anything other than transient lowering of intraocular pressure. In the coming era, it seems probable that neuroprotection and neurorestoration will be combined with MIGS to lower pressure. The different types of MIGS are increasing in proportion to their efficacy. To date, there are no fewer than 12 choices available to glaucoma specialists. Choice of procedure depends on the underlying anatomy as well as the patient’s individual characteristics. Truthfully, the number of available surgeries depends upon their taxonomy. Most are based on the outflow system and the canal, as illustrated in this book.
Victor Kugler
This book is based on Eda Shapiro's interviews with Kugler conducted in Toronto in 1969-73. Born in Bohemia, Kugler (1900-1981) was a business partner of Otto Frank in Amsterdam in 1933-42. When the Frank family went into hiding in 1942, Kugler continued to manage the business, and he materially supported the Franks in their Secret Annex. He appears in Anne Frank's diary as Mr. Kraler. After the Secret Annex was exposed and the Frank family was arrested by the Nazis in August 1944, Kugler was also arrested and sent to the Amersfoort internment camp. Later he was sent to the labor camps of Zwolle and Wageningen. He managed to escape from the latter camp shortly before the liberation. In 1955 Kugler settled in Canada. Mentions the symphonic and vocal composition "From the Diary of Anne Frank" by Czech-born Canadian composer Oskar Morawetz. Kugler was recognized by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Gentile, and received other awards by Canadian institutions for helping the Frank family and the others hiding in the Secret Annex.
