Civil Wars, Civil Peace

In recent years the terms 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing' have not only re-entered our vocabulary, but seem to be accepted as the 'inevitable' consequences of the conflicts that continue to plague the world's landscape. Yet there is still no globally accepted structure through which conflict can be tackled. The first introductory guide to a topic of increasingly vital importance, this book offers a radical new approach to conflict prevention, resolution and diplomacy. Designed for students as well as practitioners and peace negotiators, it provides an overview of conflict in the post-Cold War world, covering key topics such as identifying and assessing early warnings of conflict, the need to take early action, information gathering and analysis; and the need for preventive diplomacy.

The aim of this book is to analyse whether the implementation of the peacebuilding elements of the Belfast Agreement contributed to the transformation of the protracted Northern Ireland Conflict. Therefore, this book deals with the following sections of the Agreement: Rights, Safeguards and Equality of Opportunity, Decommissioning, Security, Policing and Justice, and Prisoners. The author comes to the conclusion that the majority of the peacebuilding elements contributed to the transformation of the Northern Ireland Conflict. The results of the study were obtained in conducting interviews, in consulting surveys, and in studying reports and other relevant literature on the recent developments in Northern Ireland.

The United Nations remains a unique institutional hope for addressing and resolving the world's major environmental, developmental, and humanitarian problems. It representsglobal aspirations for a just and peaceful world by inspiring the political imagination of individuals and collectivities. But, because it is now viewed primarily as a "trade union" for expressing the national political interests of 192 state parties, as Clements and Mizner's volume of essaysdemonstrate the UN has succumbed to political cynicism and skepticism. Only the UN can champion emerging international regimes, the rule of law, and global processes that generate structural stability, justice, and peace in the interna...

This book tackles the most significant issues facing Muslims today. Sachedina argues that we must reopen the doors of religious interpretation--to correct false interpretations, replace outdated laws, and formulate new doctrines. His book critically analyzes Muslim teachings on such issues as pluralism, civil society, war and peace, and violence and self-sacrifice.

Creating a South African Sub-Regional Conflict Transformation Model

This book contributes to the current academic debate and scholarly research on conflict transformation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) sub-region. It will serve as a guide on how conflict recurrences can best be tackled in the sub-region, and seeks to improve the transformation process of conflict and peace-building in the Kingdom in the Sky and in the sub-region at large. The book will shed light on the road ahead for the SADC and its role in transforming conflict into positive peace and peace-building, and will contribute to discussions on the necessity of a conflict transformation model as a key tool in efforts to transform the state of recurring intrastate conflict in Lesotho. Thus, this book will also enhance the literature and discourse on sub-regional organisations and their path towards conflict transformation on the African continent.

The end of the cold war did not begin an era of world peace. The forces of marginalization, civil war, and genocide have uprooted whole societies in Africa, the Balkans and the Caucasus. In fact, the end of superpower competition means that the world now lacks external actors powerful enough to intervene successfully in local conflicts. The early 1990s saw the beginning of a search for possibilities for conflict prevention. This work is one of the first to set the analysis of early warning and conflict prevention firmly in the context of the changes and continuities in the structures of post-Cold War politics. Early Warning and Conflict Prevention proceeds from the position that sufficient e...
