The potential benefits of plants and plant extracts in the treatment and possible prevention of many leading health concerns are historically well known and are becoming more widely studied and recognized within the medical community. It is these studies that led to the first compilation of new research developments, identifying new extracts and uses for plants in disease prevention and treatment. This major comprehensive reference work contains contributions from more than 150 clinical and academic experts covering topics such as treatments of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, as well as historical plant use by indigenous people supported by recent scientific studies. Authors review the safety and efficacy of botanical treatments while idenifying the sources, historical supportive data and mechanisms of action for emerging treatments. Written by researchers currently carrying out identification and biomedical testing, this is the most up to date text on the latest research from all over the world. It is an essential resource for health care practitioners and herbalists, as well as researcher, students and professionals in botany and alternative medicine.
To mitigate two major environmental concerns of global warming and air pollution, renewable energies with uncertainty are increasingly deployed in power systems, which challenge the system's secure operation. A single system usually has limited adjusting ability. In contrast, integrated energy systems such as electricity-gas, electricity-traffic, electricity-heat, and transmission-distribution coordinated systems enhance the regulating ability of renewable energy accommodation and environmental protection. The operation of integrated energy systems will meet three essential requirements: low-pollution attribute, robustness, and cooperativity. However, the diversity of uncertainty conditions,...
Edited by Jussi Kantola, the founding faculty member of the world's first university Knowledge Service Engineering Department at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Waldemar Karwowski from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at UCF, Knowledge Service Engineering Handbook defines what knowledge service
These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 13th European Symposium on Research in Computer Security––ESORICS 2008––held October 6–8, 2008 in Torremolinos (Malaga), Spain, and hosted by the University of Malaga, C- puter Science Department. ESORICS has become the European research event in computer security. The symposium started in 1990 and has been organized on alternate years in different European countries. From 2002 it has taken place yearly. It attracts an international audience from both the academic and industrial communities. In response to the call for papers, 168 papers were submitted to the symposium. These papers were evaluated on the basis of their significance, novelty, and technical quality. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Comm- tee. The Program Committee meeting was held electronically, holding intensive d- cussion over a period of two weeks. Finally, 37 papers were selected for presentation at the symposium, giving an acceptance rate of 22%.
This book presents the theoretical research and application results of a study on flexible mechatronics (flexonics). Formulating distributed models in both time and spatial domains using a geometric approach, it presents a simple yet practical field-based sensing method for robotics and manufacturing, and illustrates its applications with examples such as exoskeletons, mobile sensor network and intelligent sensing. The book is of interest to researchers, engineers and graduate students in robotics, manufacturing and automation engineering who wish to learn the core principles, theories, technologies, and applications of flexonics.
The two-volume set LNAI 6634 and 6635 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, PAKDD 2011, held in Shenzhen, China in May 2011. The total of 32 revised full papers and 58 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 331 submissions. The papers present new ideas, original research results, and practical development experiences from all KDD-related areas including data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence and pattern recognition, data warehousing and databases, statistics, knowledge engineering, behavior sciences, visualization, and emerging areas such as social network analysis.
These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 23rd Inter- tional Information Security Conference (SEC 2008), co-located with IFIP World Computer Congress (WCC 2008), September 8–10, 2008 in Milan, Italy. In - sponse to the call for papers, 143 papers were submitted to the conference. All - pers were evaluated on the basis of their signi?cance, novelty, and technical quality, and reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. Reviewing was blind meaning that the authors were not told which committee members reviewed which papers. The program committee meeting was held electronically, holding - tensive discussion over a period of three weeks. Of the paper...
The three volume set LNAI 10462, LNAI 10463, and LNAI 10464 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications, ICIRA 2017, held in Wuhan, China, in August 2017. The 235 papers presented in the three volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from 310 submissions. The papers in this first volume of the set are organized in topical sections on soft, micro-nano, bio-inspired robotics; human-machine interaction; swarm robotics; underwater robotics.
Motivation for the Book This book seeks to establish the state of the art in the cyber situational awareness area and to set the course for future research. A multidisciplinary group of leading researchers from cyber security, cognitive science, and decision science areas elab orate on the fundamental challenges facing the research community and identify promising solution paths. Today, when a security incident occurs, the top three questions security admin istrators would ask are in essence: What has happened? Why did it happen? What should I do? Answers to the ?rst two questions form the core of Cyber Situational Awareness. Whether the last question can be satisfactorily answered is greatl...
The Institution of Civil Engineers has organised a series of conferences to celebrate, at the start of the New Millennium, the enormous achievements made in the field of bridge engineering in recent years. This volume of papers from the second of these conferences, held in Hong Kong, encompasses the state-of-the-art in bridge design, construction, maintenance and safety assessment. It includes papers on major bridge schemes, both completed and under construction, and on innovative approaches used in various parts of the world. It also looks at local and regional projects and bridge related issues. The wealth of information contained in this publication will be of interest to bridge consultants and contractors, practising engineers, researchers and bridge owners, both local and international.
