Lateness and Modernity in Medieval Architecture

Lateness and Modernity in Medieval Architecture

How have the concepts of "lateness" and "modernity" inflected the study of medieval and early modern architecture? This volume seeks to (re)situate monuments from the 14th--16th centuries that are indebted to medieval building practices and designs within the more established narratives of art and architectural history. Drawing on case studies from Cyprus to the Dominican Republic, the book explores historiographical, methodological, and theoretical concerns related to the study of medieval architecture, bringing to the fore the meanings and functions of the Gothic in specific contexts of use and display. The development of local styles relative to competing traditions, and instances of coexistence and hybridization, are considered in relation to workshop practices and design theory, the role of ornament, the circulation of people and knowledge, spatial experiences, as well as notions of old and new. Contributors are: Jakub Adamski, Flaminia Bardati, Costanza Beltrami, Robert Bork, Jana Gajdosová, Maile S. Hutterer, Jacqueline Jung, Alice Klima, Abby McGehee, Paul Niell, Michalis Olympios, Zachary Stewart, Alice Isabella Sullivan, Kyle G. Sweeney, and Marek Walczak.

Traditional histories of medieval art and architecture often privilege the moment of a work’s creation, yet surviving works designated as "medieval" have long and expansive lives. Many have extended prehistories emerging from their sites and contexts of creation, and most have undergone a variety of interventions, including adaptations and restorations, since coming into being. The lives of these works have been further extended through historiography, museum exhibitions, and digital media. Inspired by the literary category of biography and the methods of longue durée historians, the introduction and seventeen chapters of this volume provide an extended meditation on the longevity of medi...

Traditional narratives hold that the art and architecture of the Iberian Peninsula in the late 15th century were transformed by the arrival of artists, objects, and ideas from northern Europe. The year 1492 has been interpreted as a radical rupture, marking the end of the Islamic presence on the peninsula, the beginning of global encounters, and the intensification of exchange between Iberia and Renaissance Italy. This volume aims to nuance and challenge this narrative, considering the Spanish and Portuguese worlds in conjunction, and emphasising the multi-directional migrations of both objects and people to and from the peninsula. This long-marginalised region is recast as a ‘diffuse arti...

Samuels and Ropper's Neurological CPCs from the New England Journal of Medicine

Samuels and Ropper's Neurological CPCs from the New England Journal of Medicine is a collection of clinicopathological cases (CPCs) authored by two of the most frequent discussors of the storied "Clinical Pathologic Conference" first introduced by Richard Cabot in the early 1900s and published in the "New England Journal of Medicine." In one concise volume, the authors present 18 cases, assembled chronologically, that encompass the wider variety of neurologic conditions encountered by every resident and practicing clinician. Each case concludes with a modern perspective to bring the classic case in to a modern setting. These cases exemplify the traditional method of neurologic diagnosis and are the perfect catalyst with which to stimulate discussions with students and residents as well as a supplement to standardized course material.
