HIV, Perinatal Infections, and Therapy

Papers on the role of the placenta in HIV and other perinatal infections. Proceedings from the 12th Rochester Trophoblast Conference, held in Autumn 1992 in Rochester, New York. The first part of the book addresses the role of the placenta in the transmission of the HIV infection, the central focus of the Conference. Other pre-natal infections, including CMV, Vaccina, Parvovirus, Syphillis, and Herpes Simplex, are then considered, and their implications for perinatal health investigated. The importance of cell regulation is alsodiscussed, exploring the controlling factors which modulate the placental cell membrane and metabolic functions, such as genetic imprinting; the regulation of arachidonic acid cascade; autocrine role for human chorionic gonadotropin; biochemical screening for Down's Syndrome; the role of growth factors and interferon; the autoregulation of gas exchange; and the role of uterine cytokines. HENRY THIEDE is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester. RICHARD K. MILLERteaches in the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Reading, Writing, Mathematics and the Developing Brain: Listening to Many Voices

This valuable addition to the literature offers readers a comprehensive overview of recent brain imaging research focused on reading, writing and mathematics—a research arena characterized by rapid advances that follow on the heels of fresh developments and techniques in brain imaging itself. With contributions from many of the lead scientists in this field, a number of whom have been responsible for key breakthroughs, the coverage deals with the commonalities of, as well as the differences between, brain activity related to the three core educational topics. At the same time, the volume addresses vital new information on both brain and behavior indicators of developmental problems, and points out the new directions being pursued using current advances in brain imaging technologies as well as research-based interventions. The book is also a tribute to a new Edmund, J Safra Brain center for the study of learning Disabilities at the University of Haifa-Israel.

Endometrial Gene Expression

Endometrial Gene Expression

The endometrium goes through cyclical changes under the influence of hormones, and immune effectors in the endometrium change their populations cyclically as well. Dynamic changes in immune effectors determine endometrial cytokine and chemokine milieus and, consequently, the endometrial immune response. Endometrial immune responses have been shown to be important for trophoblast invasion and early pregnancy. Indeed, dysregulated endometrial inflammatory immune responses are associated with reproductive failures, such as recurrent pregnancy losses, repeated implantation failure, and gynecological diseases with oncogenic potential. Hence, the investigation of endometrial gene expression may pr...

Jews in Soviet Culture

Jews in Soviet Culture is the first authoritative book on Jewish contributions to Soviet culture, covering the fields of literature, painting, sculpture, music, philosophy, and Oriental studies. Unlike other works on Jews in the Soviet Union that deal mainly with political history--especially with discrimination and repression--this book focusses on the creative role of Jews in various aspects of Soviet culture and civilization. This is a substantial contribution to modern Jewish studies, Soviet studies, and European cultural history. The contributors, several of whom have recently emigrated to the West, are experts from a variety of cultural fields. The volume is a painful but useful reminder that the cultural life of a people and a nation continues--sometimes in harmony, other times at odds--but it continues.

This book provides a comprehensive review of the properties of various stem cell types, the mechanisms of their behaviors and their potential clinical application. Stem cells have a great capacity of self-renewal and differentiation. They represent new paradigms for disease treatment in the field of regenerative medicine since the day they were discovered. As stem cell research is complicated and making progress rapidly, it is important to have expertise in this field to share their views and perspectives. This book provides a wonderful platform for those who are interested in stem cells to learn from and communicate with experts. Particularly, it highlights the roles of stem cell based ther...
