Scholars have been curious about the development of arts & letters in Africa since the last European colonies on that continent attained independence in 1975. On Cape Verde, the Portuguese entered into close relations with Black Africa, represented by enslaved men, women & children it carried there from the nearest mainland. From the mid-19th century on, works of fiction & poetry were written in Cape Verde, but this lit. remained a regional or colonial variant of the lit. of Portugal. The foundations of a national lit. were laid between 1935 & 1960, with a group of intellectuals gathered around the poet Jorge Barbosa. Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 2003
The annual Going Romance conference is the major European discussion forum for theoretically relevant research on Romance languages where current ideas about language in general and about Romance languages in particular are tested. Starting with the thirteenth conference held in 1999, volumes with selected papers of the conferences are published under the title Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory, This is the fifth such volume, containing a selection of papers that have been presented at the seventeenth Going Romance conference, held at the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) from 2022 November 2003. The three-day program included a workshop on 'Diachronic Phonology'. The present volume contains a broad range of articles dealing not only with syntax and phonology, but also with morphology, semantics and acquisition of the Romance languages.

A Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian
Even after a century, Buck's Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian is still regarded as the authoritative English treatment of these languages, which were spoken on the Italian peninsula during the Roman Republic (509 B.C. through 31 B.C.). Buck's introduction gives general information on orthography and lists key similarities and differences between these two languages, with comparisons with Latin. The grammar features an extensive 80-page section on phonology, followed by an equally detailed 100 pages on grammatical inflection and syntax. A collection of the most important inscriptions in Oscan and Umbrian follows, with a separate glossary for each language. Buck's work also features photographs and illustrations of important inscriptions, as well as a map. This reprint of the 1904 edition is an indispensable resource for the study of the Italic dialects of pre-Roman Italy.

The Intercultural Weaving of Historical Texts
The European view on history was shaken to its foundations when missionaries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries discovered that Chinese history was older than European and Biblical history. With an analysis of the Chinese, Manchu and European sources on ancient Chinese history, this essay proposes an early case of “intercultural historiography,” in which historical texts of different cultures are interwoven. It focusses on the ways Chinese and European authors interpreted stories about marvellous births by the concubines of Emperor Ku. These stories have been the object of a wide variety of interpretations in Chinese texts, each of them representing a different historical genre. They are excellent case-studies to illustrate how the Chinese hermeneutic strategies shaped the diversity of interpretations given by Europeans.
