In Book 1, Lang Maria Liu set out to explore the heart of capoeira, immersing herself into the life of Salvador da Bahia. She joined Mestre Curio's Capoeira Angola school, as well as Mestre Nenel's traditional Regional school. Then, in Book 2, she found herself on the bumpy roads of Brazil exploring the many facets of capoeira. Making her way from the northeast coast to the mouth of the Amazon River, she wondered if there was a unifying essence within all the diversity of capoeira. In her third and last Book, "Closing the Circle of Capoeira," the author is faced with several crucial decisions: will she continue on her capoeira path alone, or will she finally find a home for her capoeira school in Toronto? Has she collected enough interviews and gathered enough knowledge to write her dissertation on capoeira? And lastly, where will the love that swept her up take her?

In Book One, Lang Maria Liu's found herself immersed in the vibrant world of Bahian capoeira, struggling to find her bearings after the dissolution of both her marriage and her capoeira school. In Book Two, she journeys once more to Brazil, hoping to deepen her knowledge of capoeira. Is there a common essence that unites this art form in its myriad manifestations? Can the spirit of Bahian capoeira be found in other parts of Brazil? We are plunged from the colourful streets of Recife's Carnival to a steaming Amazonian shantytown. Salvador, the cradle of capoeira, has become more familiar, but with deepening relationships comes greater responsibility. Even as the author struggles to define her practice of capoeira and give shape to her research, a danger looms over her. She embarks on an impossible love story -- one that threatens to destroy her.

Bimba's Rhythm is One, Two, Three is Lang Maria Liu's first book. Part ethnography, travelogue and personal odyssey, it bridges many genres in its search for truth and hope. In Book One, the reader is taken deep into the Afro-Bahian world of capoeira on the northeast coast of Brazil, where slave ships once plied the shores. During this first of three trips to Brazil undertaken for her Ph.D., the boundaries between research and personal experience blur. Recently divorced and having left behind the capoeira school she co-founded with her ex-husband in Canada, the author finds herself falling in love with a capoeira master. Will she find her place in this world, one so different from her own? And can the wounds of her past, stretching back generations, ever be healed? Here, amongst the Afro-Bahians whom she fears at first, the author learns about our common humanity, and that the act of surrender - something she has fought all her life - may be the only true path to joy.

The Han dynasty official Sima Qian established many of the conventions of the genre. Liu Xiaodong
