Kant’s Theory of Value
In explicit form, Kant does not speak that much about values or goods. The reason for this is obvious: the concepts of ‘values’ and ‘goods’ are part of the eudaimonistic tradition, and he famously criticizes eudaimonism for its flawed ‘material’ approach to ethics. But he uses, on several occasions, the traditional teleological language of goods and values. Especially in the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant develops crucial points on this conceptual basis. Furthermore, he implicitly discusses issues of conditional and unconditional values, subjective and objective values, aesthetic or economic values etc. In recent Kant scholarship, there has been a controversy on the question how moral and nonmoral values are related in Kant’s account of human dignity. This leads to the more fundamental problem if Kant should be seen as a prescriptvist (antirealist) or as subscribing to a more objective rational agency account of goods. This issue and several further questions are addressed in this volume.
How To Save A Life
I hiss as the cold water makes contact with the back of my head. The light purple water cascades around the white basin of my toilet. Combing my fingers through my hair making sure the chemicals get rinsed off, I silently curse the ghost of my best friend. 'Seriously Bree? Dye your hair? Why couldn't you pick something easier and fun like solving crosswords on newspapers?' After making sure that my hair is properly washed, or as proper as I could get it at least, my hands find the towel by my side and I wrap my hair in it. I grimace and wipe my neck with the ends of the towel. Unhygienic, I know. But I'm too lazy to take a shower and paint my amazing tiles purple. The damage in the basin will have to suffice for now. I step out of my bathroom and put on my pajamas with ease. My eyes skim over the desk and I slowly walk over to it.
Simple Needs
I hooked desperately around me. No one was looking: I would be to.. No. It was wrong. But don't the ends justify the means? The only issue was, I didn't know what my ends were. I didn't know why I wanted to do it. All I knew is that something inside me had to. I needed it. I just didn't know why. I stared at the ATM in front of me. " she closed my door on her way out and i got up to fix my self. i had been laying down for some time so i brushed my teeth again. Prescient
Kicking my shoes of and unstrapping my bra at the same time is one of the very few skills I have and it's the first thing I do when I get home from work. My place of employment is the only place I bother to even put a bra on for and only because the customers don't want to see a person's personal parts poking through or freely bouncing around in her shirt - or so my boss said one day when she had to have the awkward conversation with me. A barely touched bottle of bourbon sits on my kitchen bench and is calling my name so I make a beeline for it, abandoning my shoes and bra on the floor where they fell. I check the fridge for softdrink to soften the bite of the liquor, and it appears I am all out. That's okay though. I'll just pour a little water in it and it'll be ready. A loud knock at my door interrupts me mid gulp and I scowl to myself. I'm not a fan of people at the best of times, but least of all those who come within my personal space. I know it's only the nosy old lady from next door anyway, so I ignore it. She's always banging on my door and trying to catch me coming and going to chat. Always the same thing, too.
Clear Things
Tears of desperation threaten my eyes as plead for my job. It is not much but if I lose this job, I won't have anything. I've only been living in Crescent Springs for a few months, I'm barely making rent and I have no safety net of savings. I don't want to go running back to my family to ask for help. My mother will never let me hear the end of her lectures on why she is never wrong and how I should just do what she says and my father; gosh I can't even imagine how he will tear into me for disobeying him and moving away from home in the first place. Going back is not an option and it will only prove that I'm as incapable as they claim. "I'm sorry Ms. Peters but I have to let you go. Frankly Amina, I don't understand it myself, you are the best employee I've ever had but I have to follow my orders. Management is restructuring the company."
