Monolingual Policy, Bilingual Interaction

The research reported here is an investigation of bilingual instruction in Bangladeshi schools. In particular, the thesis explores how schooling takes place when a second language is used as a medium of instruction to teach subject content. The study is based on a corpus of 44 hours of video recordings from real-life classroom interaction at two Bangladeshi schools in two metropolitan cities. The age range of the students is 9 to 13 years. Using multimodal conversation analysis, the thesis analyzes the participants’ practice – as it emerges through mundane classroom activities – and thereby examines participants’ language use in the presence of an existing language policy. The findin...

Framing Education

Interest in comics as Swedish school material has risen in the last few years and the publication of comics for children and adolescents has also increased. Meanwhile, although research around new literacies has taken an interest in combinations of image and text, there is still little research on comics as a literacy material, especially as part of school practices. With comics’ rise in popularity, and their quality as examples of new literacies, this points to the relevance of exploring how meaning making with comics is done in schools. The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge on how locally situated literacy practices are done, practices in which pupils and teachers make mea...

This edited collection analyses the use of comics in primary and secondary education. The editors and contributors draw together global research to examine how comics can be used for critical inquiry within schools, and how they can be used within specific disciplines. As comics are beginning to be recognised more widely as an important resource for teaching, with a huge breadth of topics and styles, this interdisciplinary book unites a variety of research to analyse how learning is 'done' with and through comics. The book will be of interest to educational practitioners and school teachers, as well as students and scholars of comic studies, education and social sciences more broadly. Robert Aman is Associate Professor in Education at Linköping University, Sweden. He primarily conducts research on ideology and the politics of representation in comics. His most recent book, The Phantom Comics and the New Left was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2020. Lars Wallner is a Senior Lecturer at Linköping University, Sweden working in the field of Pedagogic Practices. His research explores the use of comics, games and popular fiction, mainly regarding education and social interaction.

The Coherence of Linguistic Communities

This innovative collection brings together a range of perspectives on the notions of "orderly heterogeneity" and "social meaning", shedding light on how structured variation and indexicalities of social meaning "cohere" within linguistic communities. This book fills a gap in research on language variation by critically considering the position articulated by Weinrich, Labov, and Herzog in 1968 that linguistic diversity is systematically organized in ways that reflect and construct social order. The volume investigates such key themes as covariation and co-occurrence restrictions; indexicality, perception and social meaning; coherence and language change; and the structure and measurement of ...

Legacies of Slavery and Contemporary Resistance

Slavery and the past are interconnected; there is a tension between a former time of human subjugation and the time after when that captivity can still be remembered. In a sense, this volume probes this seeming contradiction, the glory of freedom’s release and the tension with a past when freedom was denied. It also argues that the existence of slavery, in modern forms, today offers continuing evidence of man’s inhumanity to man—and the resulting absence of freedom for millions of people.

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute knowledge on how the professions of teachers, special education teachers, and SENCOs interpret, form, and transform policy on adaptations in relation to the various contextual conditions of schools, to highlight how dilemmas are managed in teachers' work. The empirical material of the thesis consists of observations of teachers' work in grades 1-6, interviews with teachers, and focus group interviews with teachers, special education teachers, and SENCOs. Policy enactment is used as a theoretical framework to understand how policy documents are interpreted by various actors, adapted to the contextual conditions of practice, and subsequently recontex...
