The Cinema of Urban Crisis
The Cinema of Urban Crisis explores the relationships between cinema and urban crises in the United States and Europe in the 1970s. Discussing films by Robert Altman, Stanley Kubrick, and Jean-Luc Godard, among others, Lawrence Webb reflects on processes of globalization and urban change that were beginning to transform cities like New York, London, and Berlin. Throughout, the 1970s are conceptualized as a historically distinctive period of crisis in capitalism, which reorganized urban landscapes and produced cultural innovation, technological change, and new configurations of power and resistance. Addressing themes of interest for film, cultural, and urban studies, this book is a compelling take on cinema from both sides of the Atlantic.
William Yang
This publication, which accompanies a Queensland Art Gallery exhibition of the same name, surveys William Yang's five decades of art practice across photography, video and spoken word performance. It traces Yang's career from his early days as a social photographer in the 1970s through to some of his well-known photographic series exploring family ties, and sexual and cultural identity, as well as his recent large-scale landscape works. The publication also explores the artist's connections to Queensland, including his mid-career explorations of growing up as a Chinese Australian in far north Queensland and his recent works that reflect on the landscape.
Shot at Dawn
Commissioned by the Ruskin School of Art at the Universty of Oxford as part of 14-18 Nov WWI Centenary Art Commissions, Shot at Dawn is a new body of work by the photographer Chloe Dewe Mathew that focuses on the sites at which British, French and Belgian troops were executed for cowardice and desertion between 1914 and 1918. The project comprises images of twenty-three locations at which individuals were shot or held in the period leading up to their executions and all were taken as close to the exact time of execution as possible and at approximately the same time of year.
