With the proliferation of technology, science became a medium used to create and interpret heritage in a way that redefines human achievements. The recent advances in technology are providing us with a variety of tools aimed at exploring, experiencing and interacting with heritage in a completely new way, which was unimaginable up until a few decades ago. Suddenly, heritage has become accessible and exciting to those who might not have previously considered it interesting. This volume is an outgrowth of the workshop "Applications of Advanced Control Theory to Robotics and Automation, "organized in honor of the 70th birthdays of Petar V. Kokotovic and Salvatore (Turi) Nicosia. Both Petar and Turi have carried out distinguished work in the control community and have long been recognized as mentors, as well as experts and pioneers in the field of automatic control, covering many topics in control theory and several different applications. The variety of their research is reflected in this book, which includes contributions ranging from mathematics to laboratory experiments. The scope of the work is very broad, and although each chapter is self-contained, the book has been organized into thematically related chapters, which in some cases, suggest to the reader a convenient reading sequence. The great variety of topics covered and the almost tutorial writing style used by many of the authors will make this book suitable for both experts in the control field and young researchers who seek a more intuitive understanding of these relevant topics in the field.
The Mohammed Dahleh symposium brought together leading researchers in several areas of engineering and science. Many of the presentations focused on new emerging research areas of key significance. These new areas have in common that the dynamics and control theory and methods provide the appropriate framework for the understanding of the corresponding phenomena, while at the same time providing many of the tools necessary for their application to relevant technologies. Examples of these opportunities include the areas of systems biology, quantum feedback and control, fluid dynamics, and control applications in nanotechnology. This collected volume demonstrates the importance of these emerging areas in the current research agenda in science and technology and shows that a unique opportunity exists to drastically extend the scope and impact of dynamics and control methods far beyond their traditional areas of application in engineering.
