Brazilian Railway Culture

Brazilian Railway Culture examines the cultural relationship Brazil has had with its railways since tracks were first laid by British, American and French engineers in the nineteenth century. ‘Railway’ and ‘Brazil’ are words not often found in the same sentence. Transatlantic Radio Dramas

Fills the Gaps of an Important Modernist Brazilian Writer’s Early Career and Illuminates Recurring Themes of His Later Works The BBC Latin American Service was created in 1938, funded by the British Ministry of Information, to counter fascist propaganda broadcast to Latin America. Now considered one of the major Latin American novelists of the twentieth century, Brazilian writer Antônio Callado (1917–1997) got his start writing radio drama scripts for the BBC LAS during and after World War II. Largely forgotten until Daniel Mandur Thomaz collected them in a 2018 volume published in Brazil, these radio scripts were propaganda in their own right and were part of a concerted effort to win sympathy for Britain and the Allies in Latin America. They reveal how Callado’s experiences during the war influenced his writing and had a critical impact on themes he would revisit consistently throughout his literary career. Transatlantic Radio Dramas analyzes the scripts themselves, but also examines the institutions, material practices, and beliefs that allowed modernist transatlantic networks like the BBC LAS to flourish.

Latin American Studies

This is a comprehensive introductory guide to research on Latin America in the social sciences and the humanities. Thirty-seven chapters describe the many types of resources and research techniques available for the study of the region, identify major reference works in the field, and offer suggestions for academic training, travel, and professional development. With an author/title reference-source index, a detailed subject and institutional index, and a guide to acronyms and abbreviations. Designed to address the research needs of students, scholars, and librarians throughout the English-speaking world, this book complements SCONUL's Latin American Bibliography: A Guide, edited by L.
