Artificial intelligence (AI) permeates Google searches, the personal assistants in our smartphones, and is all over our newsfeeds. Watson’s machine learning has already started to revolutionize many important industries including oncology, law, finance, and entertainment. The idea that man is about to increase his immediate surroundings with exponential gains in the level of intelligence over the coming generations is based upon a technological revolution and the potential for artificial superintelligence (ASI). It is within this context that there is a prevailing need for a discussion of its ethical implications. As a Christian ethicist, Paul Golata believes that the need for this convers...

Faced with a decision that will affect the course of history and the balance of power in the Western hemisphere, the young urban professional Cosmo Valente struggles to find himself while trying to choose between the type of society he wishes to live in. Set in a future post-United States world that has fractured into several competing nations, plagued by civil war and interminable infighting, vying for supremacy over the remnants of the old Union. The clamorous powers of North America fight to protect their sovereignty from the expanding Communist regime of the newly created Latin American Alliance. Armed with nuclear weapons, these colossal forces confront each other in a showdown to which Cosmo holds the key to victory.
Over the last several decades, technology has emerged as an important area of interest for both philosophers and theologians. Yet, despite his status as one of modernity's seminal thinkers, Søren Kierkegaard is not often seen as one who contributed to the field. Kierkegaard and the Question Concerning Technology argues otherwise. Christopher B. Barnett shows that many of Kierkegaard's criticisms of "the present age" relate to the increasing dominance of technology in the West, and he puts Kierkegaard's thought in conversation with subsequent thinkers who grappled with technological issues, from Martin Heidegger to Thomas Merton. Barnett shows that Kierkegaard's writing, with its marked emphases on personal "upbuilding," stands as a place where deeper, non-technical modes of thinking are both commended and nurtured. In doing so, Barnett presents a Kierkegaard who remains relevant--perhaps all too relevant--in today's digital age.
