The author examines the development of Barbara McClintock’s scientific work and her influence upon individuals and upon the fields of cytogenetics and evolutionary biology in the period from 1902 to the present. The history documents years of McClintock’s notable and lauded scientific work long before she discovered and named transposable elements in the mid-1940s for which she ultimately received the Nobel Prize. The biography employs documented evidence to expose, demystify, and provide clarity for legends and misinterpretations of McClintock’s life and work. Key Features Exposes and demystifies myths and legends told about McClintock’s time in Missouri Clarifies the changing language of genes and genetics Places in perspective the history of McClintock’s research Documents McClintock’s family and early life before college Provides documented details of McClintock’s time in Nazi Germany

This two volume set is a collection of papers and perspectives on the publications of Nobel Laureate Barbara McClintock, who was educated in Plant Breeding and Botany at Cornell University (1919-1927), and where she had been a faculty member (1927-1931), and research assistant (1934-1936). McClintock later reported significant early investigations that were basic to an understanding of her discovery of "mobile genetic elements" (controlling elements, transposable elements, transposons) in maize, for which she received the Prize in 1983. McClintock's research builds on work she began in the 1920s, and the only way to understand how she arrived at her conclusions is to start at the beginning. This "Companion Volume" includes reproductions of McClintock's earliest publications and abstracts, including her investigations of fungi and Races of Maize in Latin America, with accompanying "perspectives" (summaries and analysis) preceding individual articles or sets of papers. It also provides perspectives on papers previously reprinted without reprinting them here.

Collecting Experiments

Databases have revolutionized nearly every aspect of our lives. Information of all sorts is being collected on a massive scale, from Google to Facebook and well beyond. But as the amount of information in databases explodes, we are forced to reassess our ideas about what knowledge is, how it is produced, to whom it belongs, and who can be credited for producing it. Every scientist working today draws on databases to produce scientific knowledge. Databases have become more common than microscopes, voltmeters, and test tubes, and the increasing amount of data has led to major changes in research practices and profound reflections on the proper professional roles of data producers, collectors, ...
