The origins of selected instances of metamorphosis in Germanic literature are traced from their roots in Ovid's Metamorphoses, grouped roughly on an 'ascending evolutionary scale' (invertebrates, birds, animals, and mermaids). Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid's Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Vol. 2 is dedicated to the use of Kierkegaard by later Danish writers. Almost from the beginning Kierkegaard's works were standard reading for these authors. Danish novelists and critics from the Modern Breakthrough movement in the 1870s were among the first to make extensive use of his writings. This inaugural issue of Romantik: Journal for the Study of Romanticisms contains seven articles that explore the connection between Romanticism and the political sphere. This topic has long been in need of redefinition. By gathering work from across disciplines with an interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scope, the topic is opened up to new perspectives of investigation. The articles in this first issue present new and exciting analyses of such diverse discourses as mythology, the fairy tale, historiography, elite culture, landscape painting, sculpture and dreaming.
This book explores various forms of cultural influence and exchange between Britain and the Nordic countries in the late eighteenth century and romantic period. Broadly new-historicist in approach, but drawing also on influential descriptions of genre, discipline, mediation, cultural exchange, and comparative methodologies, these essays not only constitute a substantial and innovative contribution to scholarly understanding of the development of romanticisms and romantic nationalisms in Britain and the Nordic countries, but also describe a pattern of cultural encounter which was predicated upon exchange and a sense of commonality rather than upon the perception of difference or alterity which has so often been discerned by critical descriptions of British romantic-period engagements with non-British cultures. The articles in this second issue of Romantik: Journal for the Study of Romanticisms demonstrate the crucial role of emergent regionalism and nationalism within the Romantic movement. However, the contributors also explore how the transmission of ideas and inspiration took place across national as well as linguistic boundaries, and how knowledge was transferred from one domain of knowledge to another. The articles provide a new map of such cultural exchanges in the Romantic era and the multiplicity of agencies that made them possible. Romantik continues to locate the plurality of European Romanticisms within a comprehensive and multilingual context.
Philosophy and Kafka is a collection of original essays interrogating the relationship of literature and philosophy. Literature and its interactions with other disciplines such as history, philosophy, anthropology, the visual and multimedia arts, social sciences, medicine, technologies, are at the core of many potential and multifaceted investigations, originating within literary discourse itself. Through these multifarious multidisciplinary approaches, literature can be seen as a complex and dynamic system, in which issues of cross-cultural contact can be tackled from different theoretical and methodological points of view. This volume focuses on the philosophical and scientific debate on cultural contact by investigating the critical implications of these dynamics through multidisciplinary perspectives to literary studies, and bridging the gap between apparently divergent approaches.
