Baltic Hospitality from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century
Reflecting debate around hospitality and the Baltic Sea region, this open access book taps into wider discussions about reception, securitization and xenophobic attitudes towards migrants and strangers. Focusing on coastal and urban areas, the collection presents an overview of the responses of host communities to guests and strangers in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea, from the early eleventh century to the twentieth. The chapters investigate why and how diverse categories of strangers including migrants, war refugees, prisoners of war, merchants, missionaries and vagrants, were portrayed as threats to local populations or as objects of their charity, shedding light on the current predicament facing many European countries. Emphasizing the Baltic Sea region as a uniquely multi-layered space of intercultural encounter and conflict, this book demonstrates the significance of Northeastern Europe to migration history.

Han analyserar det första skedet av vår egen kapitalistiska konsumtionskultur, där valen mellan olika varor står i centrum för hur vi skapar oss själva som individer. Konstruktionen av kvinnan som aktiv konsument, som flitigt arbetande i hem och på kontor och som sexualiserat objekt kom redan då att bli en väsentlig del av kapitalismens språk. Reklamens kvinna var ung och vacker, ibland självständig men oftare underordnad bilderna både förstärkte och utmanade samtida ideal. Reklamen var en magisk spegel i vilken konsumenten såg sin potential om hon valde rätt. Den speglade inte bara sin tid utan formade såväl sin samtid som framtiden vår tid.

This House Is Not a Home: European Everyday Life in Canton and Macao 1730–1830
Lisa Hellman offers the first study of European everyday life in Canton and Macao. How foreigners could live, communicate, move around – even whom they could interaction with – were all things strictly regulated by the Chinese authorities. The Europeans sometimes adapted to, and sometimes subverted, these rules. Focusing on this conditional domesticity shows the importance of gender relations, especially the construction of masculinity. Using the Swedish East India Company, a minor European actor in an expanding Asian empire, as a point of entry highlights the multiplicity of actors taking part in local negotiations of power. The European attempts at making a home in China contributes to a global turn in everyday history, but also to an everyday turn in global history.
