Victoria, Queen of the Screen
Both in life and death, Queen Victoria is among the most popular monarchs to be committed to film. Her reign was characterized by an explosion in media coverage that began to rely on images rather than words to tell her story. Even though Victoria has been labeled the "first media monarch," the sheer magnitude of her screen presence has been neither chronicled nor fully appreciated until now. This book examines the growth and evolution of Queen Victoria's on-screen image. From the satirical cartoons and silent films of the 19th century to the television shows, video games, and webcomics of the 21st, it demonstrates how the protean Victoria character has evolved, ultimately meaning many different things to many different people in many different ways. George Washington on Screen
One of the most moving narratives from the American Revolution is the first presidential administration and the many precedents set by George Washington. While media historians have extensively analyzed screen portrayals of the more sensational events of America in the 1750s to the 1790s, far less attention has been paid to portrayals of the first presidency and the character of George Washington in film, television and other formats. This book addresses that gap by providing the most comprehensive analysis of the character of George Washington on screen. Divided into two parts, the book begins with an analysis of how the Washington character has evolved through time and screen media, from early silent films to modern multimedia products. In Part II, a filmography documents each piece of screen media that features a representation of Washington. Generating Texts
In Generating Texts, Sharon Cadman Seelig tests traditional notions of genre by analyzing parallels between works that confound existing categories. Seelig pairs three seventeenth-century prose works with three other works, each of a later century: Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy with Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Browne's Religio Medici with Thoreau's Walden, and Donne's Devotions upon Emergent Occasions with Eliot's Four Quartets. Proceeding from her authors' similarities in method and common sets of assumptions (such as concern with process and discovery, time and eternity, or the nature of the self), she uncovers parallels showing that genre is not simply a set of formal features but rather a particular way of seeing the world that grows out of authorial attitude, impulse, and occasion. In addition to its obvious appeal to students and scholars interested in Sterne, Thoreau, Eliot or seventeenth-century literature, Generating Texts should interest literary scholars and students more generally, particularly those concerned with the interconnections between literary periods and genres. Seelig has written an original and accessible contribution to the field of genre study.
Movies, Modernism, and the Science Fiction Pulps
What impact did the new art of film have on the development of another new art, the emerging science fiction genre, during the pre- and early post-World War II era? Focusing on such popular pulp magazines as Amazing Stories, Astounding Stories, and Wonder Stories, this book traces this early relationship between film and literature through four common features: stories that involve film or the film industry; film-related advertising; editorial matters and readers' letters commenting on film; and the magazines' heralded cover and story illustrations. By surveying these haunting traces of another medium in early science fiction discourse, we can begin to see the key role that a cinematic mindedness played in this formative era and to expand the early history of science fiction as a cultural idea beyond the usual boundaries that have been staked out by its literary manifestations and the genre's historians.

The Beautiful Oblique
As Samuel Johnson noticed, there has always been something 'odd' about Tristram Shandy - a literary autobiography that begins with the narrator's conception and ends before his birth. However, while time has been recognized as being central to the narrative strategies of Tristram Shandy, the role of time in the novel has rarely been examined in any substantive detail. This book offers the first extended consideration of the representation of time in Tristram Shandy. Its central argument is that the 'oddness' of the novel's formal and typographical experimentation, fragmentation of narrative sequence, destabilization of the autobiographical subject and emphasis on textual materiality derives from a radical conception of temporality. In showing how Tristram Shandy conceives of temporality as an alterity that disrupts both subjectivity and representation, this study not only provides a theoretical commentary on the novel's temporal experimentation, but also demonstrates the continuing importance of Tristram Shandy for the critical theory of fiction.
