As a schoolboy the only thing Len Woodgate wanted to do was to join the RAF. He achieved this at the tender age of 16, by becoming a member of the 49th Entry of the RAF Halton Apprenticeship scheme. Then followed a full career in the RAF where he later gained a commission. As well as the UK, he was posted on several overseas tours. He finished his service by taking charge of the Aerospace Museum at Cosford and prepared it to be taken over as part of the Royal Air Force Museum. Now, aged 87, Len Woodgate is a remarkable man who has lived an equally remarkable life. His mind is still as sharp as a razor and his memory is still crystal clear. Numerous of Len's exploits and achievements are related within his book.

Seek and Strike – RAF Brüggen in War and Peace is an anecdotal history of the largest RAF station in Germany. Optimized for a new breed of aircraft, and to NATO requirements, this huge airfield was cut out of the Elmpt Forest, on the German border with Holland, and completed in one year to become operational in 1953. First occupied by a fighter wing equipped with Vampires, Sabres and Hunters, its ‘Seek and Strike’ motif took on real meaning when the station re-equipped with strike, attack and reconnaissance Canberras, followed by strike/attack Phantoms, Jaguars and finally Tornados. RAF Brüggen was at the forefront of the Cold War, during which innovation and determination brought it...

Leicestershire and Rutland

Pevsner wrote that "Leicestershire is not a county of extremes" and agreed that "no other county in England surpasses Rutland for unspoiled quiet charm". The large and the small Midland counties possess a varied and rewarding range of buildings. Church architecture encompasses the classical Normanton, preserved in remote isolation from the flood of Rutland Water, to Market Harborough with its elegant medieval steeple, and a fine group of Victorian churches in Leicester. The major country houses include Belvoir Castle, Staunton Harold and Burley-on-the-Hill, while the more modest homes of the late nineteenth century include notable work by Ernest Gimson, Voysey and a garden city at Leicester by Parker & Unwin. Leicestershire also possesses fine modern buildings, from its architecturally progressive schools to the justly renowned buildings of Leicester University, dominated by Stirling & Gowan's Engineering Building.

But for These Things – Leicester and its People in WWII

There have been several books on Leicester during the Second World War, but I felt that some significant omissions remained. First and foremost I wanted to give a voice to the people who lived through those times, but whose personal stories are rarely heard in the official records. I also wanted to touch upon some of the themes not generally covered or glossed over in other histories, notable amongst which were the crime wave which swept the city during the war and the race disturbances that occurred during 1943-44. Balanced against these are other untold stories, such as the gallantry and sacrifices of the men, women and children of the city, the requisitioned factories and offices which from 1939 onwards became home to the Army’s largest ever pay office, and the contribution made by the city's industry to the war effort. Finally, I also wanted to take a little time to explore what happened after the celebrations had ended and the bunting had been put away. Although some of the stories may make uncomfortable reading, I have tried to be as balanced in my reporting as possible.
