We have known for some time of the pervasive presence of rhythmic variation in most of the processes of the body, and especially of those rhythms called "circadian," that is, showing a periodicity of about 24 hours. We have known less about the function and influence of these rhythms. Now accumulating lines of evidence from several sources suggest that circadian rhythms may be associated with the affective mental disorders-depression (unipolar) and manic depressive illness (bipolar). The hypothesis is proposed that these psychoses may be linked to biological rhythms which are out of phase with each other, or to failures in their synchronization with the external day-night cycle.
