Supersymmetry and Noncommutative Geometry

In this work the question whether noncommutative geometry allows for supersymmetric theories is addressed. Noncommutative geometry has seen remarkable applications in high energy physics, viz. the geometrical interpretation of the Standard Model, however such a question has not been answered in a conclusive way so far.The book starts with a systematic analysis of the possibilities for so-called almost-commutative geometries on a 4-dimensional, flat background to exhibit not only a particle content that is eligible for supersymmetry, but also have a supersymmetric action. An approach is proposed in which the basic `building blocks' of potentially supersymmetric theories and the demands for their action to be supersymmetric are identified. It is then described how a novel kind of soft supersymmetry breaking Lagrangian arises naturally from the spectral action. Finally, the above formalism is applied to explore the existence of a noncommutative version of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. This book is intended for mathematical/theoretical physicists with an interest in the applications of noncommutative geometry to supersymmetric field theories.

Games Prisoners Play

On March 11, 1985, a van was pulled over in Warsaw for a routine traffic check that turned out to be anything but routine. Inside was Marek Kaminski, a Warsaw University student who also ran an underground press for Solidarity. The police discovered illegal books in the vehicle, and in a matter of hours five secret police escorted Kaminski to jail. A sociology and mathematics major one day, Kaminski was the next a political prisoner trying to adjust to a bizarre and dangerous new world. This remarkable book represents his attempts to understand that world. As a coping strategy until he won his freedom half a year later by faking serious illness, Kaminski took clandestine notes on prison subc...

Who was David Weiser?

During the sweltering summer of 1957 in Gdansk, three boys and a girl fall under the spell of a mysterious classmate, David Weiser. A thin Jewish boy of few words, Weiser can hypnotize panthers, shoot a bullet through a Hitler stamp at a hundred meters, and even levitate. After staging a spectacular explosion with a hidden cache of old German munitions, Weiser and the girl, Elka, vanish without a trace, leaving the three other boys, including Pawel Heller - the novel's narrator - to explain his disappearance to the authorities. But the boys won't talk. What happened to David Weiser? And who was he - a demon, a prophet, or just a boy? Heller's quest for the answers to these questions makes for a beguiling and haunting tale.

The Polish Climate in the European Context: An Historical Overview

Reconstruction of the climate variability of the past 500 years is a topic of great scientific interest not only in global terms, but also at regional and local levels. This period is interesting on account of the increasing influence of anthropogenic forcing and its overlap with natural factors. The Polish Climate in the European Context: An Historical Overview summarises the results of research into climate variability based on a combination of instrumental, documentary, dendrochronological and borehole data from Poland. The first part of the book provides a Central European perspective of research in these fields, which forms the general background for a presentation of the state of the a...

Nano-Bio- Electronic, Photonic and MEMS Packaging

Nanotechnologies are being applied to the biotechnology area, especially in the area of nano material synthesis. Until recently, there has been little research into how to implement nano/bio materials into the device level. “Nano and Bio Electronics Packaging” discusses how nanofabrication techniques can be used to customize packaging for nano devices with applications to biological and biomedical research and products. Covering such topics as nano bio sensing electronics, bio device packaging, NEMs for Bio Devices and much more.

"An ingenious marriage of comedy and crime." --Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel laureate and author of Man Booker International Prize winner Flights A charming, witty, and deliciously spooky mystery, inspired by the work of Agatha Christie, following a bored socialite who becomes Cracow's most cunning amateur sleuth. Cracow, 1893. Zofia Turbotyńska--professor's wife and socialite--is bored at home, with little to do but plan a charity auction sponsored by the wealthy residents of a local nursing home and the nuns who work there. But when one of those residents is found dead, Zofia finds a calling: solving crimes. Ridiculed by the police, who have declared the deaths of natural cause, she starts her own murder investigation, unbeknownst to anyone but her loyal cook Franciszka and one reluctant nun. With her husband blissfully unaware of her secret, Zofia remakes herself into Cracow's greatest--or at the very least, most surprising--amateur detective. Full of period character and charm, Mrs. Mohr Goes Missing proves that everyone is capable of finding their passion in life, however unlikely it may seem.
