Using original research from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, this book reviews the recent restructuring of the global agri-food industry and the dramatic rise of global retail chains in developing and transition countries. It focuses on the private standards and requirements imposed by multinational companies investing in these countries and the resulting changes to existing supply chains. It also examines the impact of these changes on local producers, particularly poor farmers, and considers the long-term policy implications in terms of growth and poverty.
The Dynamics of Sanitary and Technical Requirements Assisting the Poor to Cope
The objective of the consultation was to provide advice to FAO and Member Governments on the impact of sanitary and phytosanitary standards on domestic livestock markets, and in particular to consider impacts on the poor who participate in livestock food chains, and the extent to which their concerns are being addressed. The Transformation of Agri-food Systems
The driving forces of income growth, demographic shifts, globalisation and technical change have led to a reorganisation of food systems from farm to plate. The characteristics of supply chains - particularly the role of supermarkets - linking farmers have changed, from consumption and retail to wholesale, processing, procurement and production. This has had a dramatic effect on smallholder farmers, particularly in developing countries. This book presents a comprehensive framework for assessing the impacts of changing agri-food systems on smallholder farmers, recognising the importance of heterogeneity between developing countries as well as within them. This book aims to explore the variety in organizational forms that exists in the European agri-food sector, and to identify an appropriate theoretical framework that includes a set of conceptual instruments to analyse this variety. Moreover, this framework should be helpful in the exploration of the relationship between organizations and the regulatory domain. The book focuses on organizational forms under two perspectives. First, it underlines the variety in organizational forms and their internal complexity. Towards a Sustainable European Agricultural Policy for the 21st Century
The debate on agricultural policy in the EU has been very lively and politically prominent over the past months. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU has undergone major changes since it was first implemented at the end of the 1960s. Commentators suggest that the CAP changes made in the Agenda 2000 reform package were insufficient to address the problems facing the CAP in the coming years. These include enlargement, new trade negotiations and the demand by European society for a safe, sustainable agri-food system, to name but a few. This report highlights the most pressing challenges to creating a sustainable CAP for the 21st century. It focuses on strategic policy options that are closely linked to the CAP system to be "hands on"; but the report refrains from becoming too specific on policy details, focusing instead on the important strategic questions. It offers six recommendations for good governance, that aim to remove bureaucratic constraints from the food industry, yet strengthen consistency and good practice.
