The Applications of New Multi-Locus GWAS Methodologies in the Genetic Dissection of Complex Traits

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are widely used in the genetic dissection of complex traits. Most existing methods are based on single-marker association in genome-wide scans with population structure and polygenic background controls. To control the false positive rate, the Bonferroni correction for multiple tests is frequently adopted. This stringent correction results in the exclusion of important loci, especially for GWAS in crop genetics. To address this issue, multi-locus GWAS methodologies have been recommended, i.e., FASTmrEMMA, ISIS EM-BLASSO, mrMLM, FASTmrMLM, pLARmEB, pKWmEB and FarmCPU. In this Research Topic, our purpose is to clarify some important issues in the applicat...

Women in the Chinese Enlightenment

"Rarely does a reviewer or publisher encounter a milestone: this is it. It is the first major study of the development of Chinese feminism in what is arguably the most formative period in the history of modern China. In its women-centered approach, the book challenges the official women's history authored by the Chinese Communist Party and long accepted by Euro-American scholars. This book will set the agenda for future scholars researching the relationship between feminism and nationalism in China."--Dorothy Ko, author of Teachers of the Inner Chambers

Modern cryptography has evolved dramatically since the 1970s. With the rise of new network architectures and services, the field encompasses much more than traditional communication where each side is of a single user. It also covers emerging communication where at least one side is of multiple users. New Directions of Modern Cryptography presents

The Literature and Cultural Ecology of Imperial Examinations in the Ming Dynasty

The book examines the relationship between imperial examinations and literature from the perspective of restoring the cultural ecology of imperial examinations in Ming China, breaking through the paradigm of pure literature research. This book presents an important practice in adjusting the pattern of literary research. The contents of this book include five mutually independent but supportive parts: 1) the living conditions and careers of the literary attendants; 2) the educational background and school’s consciousness of the Ming literati; 3) top candidates and Ming literature; 4) genres of imperial examination and the Ming society; 5) exam cheating cases from the perspective of politics and literature. This book will appeal to readers interested in Chinese literature and culture and the imperial examination system in ancient China.

The Combination of Data-Driven Machine Learning Approaches and Prior Knowledge for Robust Medical Image Processing and Analysis

With the availability of big image datasets and state-of-the-art computing hardware, data-driven machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, have been used in numerous medical image (CT-scans, MRI, PET, SPECT, etc..) computing tasks, ranging from image reconstruction, super-resolution, segmentation, registration all the way to disease classification and survival prediction. However, training such high-precision approaches often require large amounts of data to be collected and labelled and high-capacity graphics processing units (GPUs) installed, which are resource intensive and hence not always practical. Other hurdles such as the generalization ability to unseen new data and difficulty to interpret and explain can prevent their deployment to those clinical applications which deem such abilities imperative.
