Current Trends in Cancer Management

The field of cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment is constantly advancing. From novel biomarkers to cutting-edge imaging solutions, changing chemotherapy protocols and novel immune-targeting agents, medical teams develop and test new ways to manage this ever-growing threat to the modern age. Imaging has been a reliable method for initial diagnosis and later surveillance of premalignant and cancerous lesions of the digestive tract. This book project aims to characterize the main diagnostic procedures and novel medical and surgical treatments, as well as provide an updated view on current guidelines, premalignant lesions management, and minimally invasive curative techniques.

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health problem because it represents around 10% of all cancers and achieves a worldwide estimate of 1.4 million newly diagnosed cases annually, resulting in approximately 700,000 deaths. Approximately 19-31% of patients present liver metastases. At diagnosis, a further 23-38% will develop extra-hepatic disease. Over the past decade, the widespread use of modern chemotherapeutic and biological agents, combined with laparoscopic surgical techniques, has improved the prognosis of metastatic CRC. A better understanding of the biology of the tumor, along with high efficiency of diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as the spread of screening programs, will improve the survival of the CRC patients in the near future.

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Endoscopy has had a major impact in the development of modern gastroenterology. By using different data it provided a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, described new entities and changed diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Meanwhile, taking advantage of many technical advances, endoscopy has had a developed spectacularly. Video-endoscopes, magnification, confocal and narrow-band imaging endoscopes, endoscopic ultrasounds and enteroscopes emerged. Moreover, endoscopy has surpassed its function as an examination tool and it became a rapid and efficient therapeutic tool of low invasiveness. InTech Open Access Publisher selected several known names from all continents and countries with different levels of development. Multiple specific points of view, with respect to different origins of the authors were presented together with various topics regarding diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy. This book represents a valuable tool for formation and continuous medical education in endoscopy considering the performances or technical possibilities in different parts of the world.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy has had a major impact in the development of modern medicine and other medical specialties. The field of endoscopic procedure has developed over the last decade. By using different data it provided a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, described new entities and used for early detection, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic procedures. The advantages of many technical advances and modern endoscopic equipments, endoscopy has had a developed spectacularly. Consequently, endoscopy has surpassed its function as an examination tool and it became a rapid and efficient therapeutic tool of various organs including gastrointestinal tract, head and neck, respiratory tract and others. The efficacy and usefulness of endoscopy has yet been established.

Hepatitis A and Other Associated Hepatobiliary Diseases

Hepatitis A is a major health concern throughout the world. Its impact has largely been limited in recent times by the large-scale use of vaccines. It is, however, still rampant in various parts of the world, partly due to lack of medication, poor water access, and contaminated food products. This book provides comprehensive information on various aspects of hepatitis A with a focus on three of the most important biliary diseases: cholestasis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Chapters cover such topics as pathology, epidemiology, at-risk populations, animal research models, and future trends.

Cancer Management and Therapy

There are many different types of cancer. Some are very common; others are rare. Having some similar features, each cancer has its own characteristics and symptoms, which vary according to the type of cancer and where it is in the body. The treatment selected may be influenced by the patient's age, concurrent health problems, life expectancy, characteristics of the individual's cancer, the patient's goals of treatment, and the bias of the treating physician. In preparing this book, we have considered and reflected on the concept of the recent advances in cancer management and therapy as well as molecular applications in cancer therapy. The readers can find detailed information about the treatment and management of specific cancers in these book chapters.

Tumor Progression and Metastasis

This book offers significant coverage on different aspects of cancer from risk factors to the mechanisms leading to tumor progression and metastasis. Although tremendous progress has been made in cancer research and treatment, cancer metastasis remains a major unmet clinical need. The life and death of many cancer patients hangs on the degree of metastasis. This book provides new perspectives for diagnosis and cancer therapy. It includes new technologies and a new basis for current cancer therapies. To guarantee the high quality of this book, important topics are included and rigorously discussed in a simple and authentic way. The book addresses important challenges governing tumor progression and metastasis and brings new responses to both diagnosis and therapy. This book is a great source of knowledge and will be useful for researchers, medical doctors, oncologists, graduate and medical students, continued medical educators, health care providers, and all individuals interested in understanding cancer and its challenges.

Pheochromocytoma, Paraganglioma and Neuroblastoma

Pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma and neuroblastoma are the most common neural crest-derived tumors in adults and children, respectively. These neoplasms are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Some international studies currently underway are researching and evaluating the presence of any similarities and differences between these tumors. Hopefully, future results will reveal several potential novel genes and pathways that might have major roles in the pathogenesis and progression of these neoplasms. This book discusses epidemiology, genetics, and treatment of these malignancies.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

With the support of multinational specialists, each with different background and separate field of expertise in oncology, this book had the occasion to emerge and to offer physicians, researchers and academics efficient, well-organized and updated scientific information related to the characteristics and treatment modalities of squamous cell carcinoma. It provided in-depth information regarding the comprehension of the molecular interaction of signalling pathways and new phenotypes that might result and lead to further cell proliferation and metastases. It also emphasized on the management and individualization of treatment strategies in different types of SCC, applying molecular profiling ...
