Agroenergy: Renewable and Sustainable Energy presents developments in agroenergy. With a particular focus on sustainability, each section of the book – crop productivity, biofuel production based on feedstock generation, and bioenergy production technologies – addresses different aspects of the agroenergetic production chain, identifying strategies for enhanced yields and reduced risks. Sample sections explain the theoretical and economic aspects related to crop productivity, along with issues related to circular economy, lifecycle assessments, and impacts of future climate scenarios. Other chapters discuss biofuel production based on feedstock generation, describe the valorization of bi...

Nanomaterials in Biomass Conversion: Advances and Applications for Bioenergy, Biofuels and Bio-based Products critically reviews the basic principles through to the latest advances in the emerging field of nanotechnology for the production of biofuels and bioenergy. Divided into 3 parts, the first five chapters explain the fundamentals of nanomaterials, their properties, characterization, and basic processes for synthesis. Part 2, which constitutes the majority of the book, reviews the various methods and technologies for the conversion of biomass to bioenergy, biofuels, and value-added products using nanomaterials. This includes homogeneous and heterogeneous nano-catalytic systems, nano-pho...

Waste Valorisation for Bioenergy and Bioproducts: Biofuel, Biogas, and Value-Added Products presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art of waste valorization from solid, liquid, and gaseous waste streams. The book thoroughly examines the conversion of waste-to-energy from the following waste streams: • Commercial, institutional, and residential food wastes, particularly those currently disposed of in landfills. • Biosolids, organic-rich aqueous streams, and sludges from municipal wastewater treatment processes. • Manure slurries from concentrated livestock operations. • Organic wastes from industrial operations, including ,but not limited to, food and beverage manufacturi...

Marine Animal Forests

During the last decades there has been an increasing evidence of drastic changes in marine ecosystems due to human-induced impacts, especially on benthic ecosystems. The so called “animal forests” are currently showing a dramatic loss of biomass and biodiversity all over the world. These communities are dominated by sessile suspension feeder organisms (such as sponges, corals, gorgonians, bivalves, etc.) that generate three-dimensional structures, similar to the trees in the terrestrial forest. The animal forest provide several ecosystem services such as food, protection and nursery to the associated fauna, playing an important role in the local hydrodynamic and biogeochemical cycles near the sea floor and acting also as carbon sinks. The present book focus its attention on these three dimensional animal structures including, for the first time, all the different types of animal forests of the world in a single volume.

The Zapatista Movement and Mexico's Democratic Transition

Transitions from authoritarian to democratic governments can provide ripe scenarios for the emergence of new, insurgent political actors and causes. During peaceful transitions, such movements may become influential political players and gain representation for previously neglected interests and sectors of the population. But for this to happen, insurgent social movements need opportunities for mobilization, success, and survival. This book looks at Mexico'sZapatista movement, and why the movement was able to mobilize sympathy and support for the indigenous agenda inside and outside of the country, yet failed to achieve their goals vis-à-vis the Mexican state.

The Europeanization of National Foreign Policies Towards Latin America

Who shapes the European Union's policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states' relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states' bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of 'Europeanization'. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others. Practitioners, established academic experts as well emerging scholars in the field bring to be bear a novel combination of pioneering research and cutting edge conceptual analysis on this important but neglected area of the EU's foreign relations.
