Leadership argues that finding satisfaction and sanity at work requires the development of both ambition and acceptance. While these traits seem to be at odds with one another, Marques shows that each one has positive and negative elements and the trick is balancing the useful aspects of each to maximize success. The book defines this balance and its relationship to success, featuring real-world examples, useful diagrams, and cases to encourage students to reflect on how to apply these principles to their own lives. Laying the foundation for understanding the need to develop both ambition and acceptance, and providing the context for what performance means in modern times, Marques presents a framework for growing in one’s own career. Students learn how to evaluate competing impulses, and how to make critical decisions to define career success. Students of career development, leadership and organizational behavior classes will appreciate its grounded, engaging writing style.

Faith is a Verb

Goodrich traces Habitat's history back to an unsung American hero, Clarence Jordan, who in the 1940's founded a Christian community in south Georgia dedicated to social and economic justice. Koinonia Farm made headlines in the 1950's when the Ku Klux Klan and J. Edgar Hoover attempted to put it out of business for embracing integration and a seemingly "communistic" lifestyle, but is known today mainly as Habitat's birthplace. Millard Fuller, a millionaire businessman, arrived at Koinonia during a spiritual crisis in the early 1970's, and under Jordan's guidance realized that he was a "money-holic." In 1976 Fuller and his wife would found Habitat for Humanity, which in 2005 completed its 200,000th house.

Blessed Unbeliever

Sean grew up a privileged child nurtured in the womb of his Southern California fundamentalist church. He dreamed of becoming a missionary pilot and hoped Kathleen Wilberforce will share his dream. But he loses Kathleen to a rival, then watches his dream crash like a toy airplane when he washes out of the Torrey Bible Institute mission aviation program (Chicago). Flailing about with disappointments and unanswered prayers, he performs a blasphemous ritual to convince himself that he has become an atheist. Kathleen unexpectedly shows up at the Institute but carries a dark secret that shames her and isolates her from Sean. Meanwhile, Sean finds that being a good atheist is harder than he thought. In his anguish, he seeks a path back to aviation, back to Kathleen, and back to God.

Invisible Heroes - Footsteps to the Cross was an opportunity for me to use my gift and passion for writing in a way that I pray is pleasing to our Lord. The idea for the book came to me after hearing an old song by Bill Anderson titled, "Where Have all the Heroes Gone", and reading the words of two other songs, "Footsteps of Jesus" by Asa Everett and Mary Slade, and, "I Want to be Just Like You" by Phillips, Craig, and Dean. The thought occurred to me that too many of us pay a type of homage to people who have gifts, talents, or abilities that have brought them fame and fortune without paying attention to whether those people have used God's gifts to honor Him, or if they are simply interested in self. The purpose of the book is to encourage each of us to evaluate our own lives to determine if we are emulating Christ-like values or if we are also more concerned with self.

In the Name of Democracy

This is the first comprehensive, even-handed examination of U.S. policy in Latin America during the Reagan era. Drawing on interviews with U.S. officials and his own perspective as a former State Department lawyer, Thomas Carothers sheds new light on the much-discussed U.S. involvements in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Panama and turns up varied and often unexpected findings in less-studied countries such as Bolivia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Chile. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1991.
