Social Psychology
Using current socio-political thought and research, this book examines topics such as violence, social and political transition, race and racism, and sexualities. Theoretical and empirical research are related to topical problems, highlighting the complex relations of individuals to their societies and to one another. The histories and complexities of problems and their interconnectedness are examined, and possible solutions are suggested. Special attention is paid to class, sexuality, gender, and race, making psychology in general, and social psychology in particular, relevant and exciting.
Feeling lives: An intersectional exploration of past experiences and present living
We each make sense of the world through our embodied, feeling lives. We do it through the social groupings, contexts and processes which history (rather than biology) presents and assigns to us. In this collection, we aim to illustrate how these embodied feelings and emotions underpin contemporary theorising by sharing reflective autobiographical writing by individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and contexts. This somewhat unruly collection unsettles conventional academic writing precisely because authors have grounded themselves in the tangible and the personal rather than in abstract theory. We hope that readers might see aspects of their own lives in some of these stories, develop better understandings of lives that are experienced very differently, and start (or continue) to theorise their own lives.
Transforming Transformation in Research and Teaching at South African Universities
What is transformation in contemporary South African higher education? How can it be facilitated through research and pedagogic practices? These questions are addressed in this edited collection by established academics and emerging research students from nine South African universities. The chapters give us access to students? worlds: how they construct, experience and navigate their complex spheres, on and off campus. By engaging with students as knowledge producers, we transform popular ways of thinking about race, gender, class, sexuality, disability and age as singular and natural markers of difference and diversity.ÿ Rather than taking diversity as fixed and rooted in nature, we explore how diversity is imagined and lived in particular contexts on and off campus.

The Forgotten People
The apartheid state employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination - and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of 'enemies of the state' were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became 'a slow torture of the soul', a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective.
