Perceptions of China in Modern Portuguese Literature
Annotation This work focuses specifically on the literature of the last one hundred years. It shows how Portuguese orientalism at the turn of the last century, while not ignoring 'orientalist' influences from Northern Europe, became woven into the perception writers had of their own country's history, the discoveries Portugal had pioneered, and its declining international role. The fiction, poetry and travel writing of authors who lived in or visited Macau, invariably view China through the prism of Portugal's past history, even though, between the end of the nineteenth as at the end of the twentieth century, new issues of gender and ethnicity and the emergence of a small Eurasian intelligentsia in Macau had lent variety to the literature. This volume examines work by Camilo Pessanha, Eca de Queiros, Miguel Torga, Deolinda da Conceicao, Maria Ondina Braga, Henrique de Senna Fernandes, and Rodrigo Leal de Carvalho.
Historical Dictionary of East Timor
East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, located at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. East Timor was among the last of colonial territories to become independent, and it actually had to be liberated twice. First, after more than four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, it achieved independence in 1975 only to be invaded and occupied by Indonesia. After a blood-soaked occupation of 24 years and following intense international pressure, the Jakarta-regime only grudgingly allowed East Timor to form a nation of its own in 1999. Since then, the new state has faced further armed clashes and is only now able to seriously engage in nation-building. Historical Dictionary of East Timor relates the turbulent history of this country through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of East Timor history from the earliest times to the present.

The British Presence in Macau, 1635-1793
For more than four centuries, Macau was the centre of Portuguese trade and culture on the South China Coast. Until the founding of Hong Kong and the opening of other ports in the 1840s, it was also the main gateway to China for independent British merchants and their only place of permanent residence. Drawing extensively on Portuguese as well as British sources, The British Presence in Macau traces Anglo-Portuguese relations in South China from the first arrival of English trading ships in the 1630s to the establishment of factories at Canton, the beginnings of the opium trade, and the Macartney Embassy of 1793. The British and Portuguese—longstanding allies in the West—pursued more complex relations in the East, as trading interests clashed under a Chinese imperial system and as the British increasingly asserted their power as “a community in search of a colony”.
Collections, Exhibitions and Museums in Portugal and Its Empire
Focusing on the period between the beginning of the eighteenth century and the late twentieth century, this edited volume examines the histories of objects, museums, exhibitions, and collections in Portugal or outside Portugal but representing Portugal, or related to it through colonial relationships. The book highlights the specificities of the Portuguese case, set against a globalised, transnational, and transcolonial context, and provides a precedent for future studies and a dialogue with equivalent studies related to other geographies. The diversity of the cultural, intellectual, and political contexts (imperial, colonial, monarchical, republican, authoritarian) offered by the Portuguese example allows for the exploration of a number of complex case-studies. Chapters study the artistic, collecting, and museological practices in Portugal and in the various geographical contexts of its colonial empire, with particular emphasis on the circulation and connectedness of objects, products, people, and ideas. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, intellectual and cultural history, and imperial and colonial history.
