Boken är hennes mest lästa och skapade en opinion som lär ha resulterat i ett riksdagsbeslut som förbättrade folkskollärarinnornas situation och lönevillkor. Mathilda Roos levde 1852−1908 och gifte sig aldrig. Hon väjde inte för tunga eller känsliga ämnen och var ofta starkt sammhällskritisk i sina texter. Debutromanen Marianne blev en omedelbar läsarsuccé när den kom ut 1881. Hennes böcker tar bland annat upp sådant som kvinnorfrågor, dubbelmoral, sexuella trakasserier och lesbisk kärlek.
