This book focuses on food, non-food, and industrial packaging applications of polymers, blends, nanostructured materials, macro, micro and nanocomposites, and renewable and biodegradable materials. It details physical, thermal, and barrier properties as well as sustainability, recycling, and regulatory issues. The book emphasizes interdis
A classical metastable state possesses a local free energy minimum at infinite sizes, but not a global one. This concept is phase size independent. We have studied a number of experimental results and proposed a new concept that there exists a wide range of metastable states in polymers on different length scales where their metastability is critically determined by the phase size and dimensionality. Metastable states are also observed in phase transformations that are kinetically impeded on the pathway to thermodynamic equilibrium. This was illustrated in structural and morphological investigations of crystallization and mesophase transitions, liquid-liquid phase separation, vitrification a...
This ACS Symposium Series is the product of a symposium held at the 241st National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. 2011. It includes chapters on new biobased building blocks such as the furandicarboxylic acid, polyesters and polyamides from adipic, succinic and sebacic acids with aliphatic diols such as 1,3-propylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,12-dodecylenediol and isosorbide.
This book presents an integrated approach to understanding the principles underlying food packaging and their applications. This edition includes new and expanded coverage of biobased packaging and bionanocomposites; nanotechnology applications, including nanoclays; metallization and atomic layer deposition; shelf life design, analysis, and estimation; safety and legislative aspects of packaging including public interest in food contact materials such as BPA and phthalates; life cycle assessment and sustainability. A new chapter addresses food packaging closures and sealing systems, including closures for plastic and composite containers and peelable seals.
Permeability properties are essential data for the selection of materials and design of products across a broad range of market sectors from food packaging to Automotive applications to Medical Devices. This unique handbook brings together a wealth of permeability data in a form that enables quick like-for-like comparisons between materials. The data is supported by a full explanation of its interpretation, and an introduction to the engineering aspects of permeability in polymers. The third edition includes expanded explanatory text which makes the book accessible to novices as well as experienced engineers, written by industry insider and author Larry McKeen (DuPont), and 20% new data and ...
This book gathers the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of mechanical engineering, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the 2020 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Materials (ICMEM), held in Beijing, China on October 16-17, 2020. ICMEM covers all aspects of mechanical engineering and material sciences, such as computer-aided design, virtual design and design visualization, intelligent design, usability design, automobile structure, human-machine interface design, manufacturing engineering, aerospace engineering, automation and robotics, micro-machining, MEMS/ NEMS, composite materials, biomaterials, smart materials, superconducting materials, materials properties and applications, materials manufacturing, nanotechnology, nano-materials and nano-composites, etc. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaborations.
Australia's post-war immigration confronts historians with perhaps the greatest paradox in our recent history. Policies and programmes of the 1940s and 1950s, designed and adopted to confirm and fortify our identity as a British-European outpost, eventually resulted in a complete abandonment of racian exclusivity. For more than half a century 'White Australia' was the foundation population policy and socio-cultural programme of the Australian Commonwealth. Bold Experiment, the first general collection of source material to describe and analyse the pattern of our immigration history since 1945, traces the undermining and destruction of 'White Australia', and the goals, policies and programmes...
