The Companion to John Wyclif contains eight substantial essays covering the central aspects of John Wyclif's life and thought. The present collection, divided into three thematic sections, includes twenty-one studies on the history of the University of Prague from its foundation in 1348 to the 16th century. The first section is devoted to the birth of the university, its first institutions, the growth of the earliest colleges and the victory of the Reformist party. The second part concentrates on the curriculum, examinations, graduations and annual disputations of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. This book explores an anonymous sixteenth-century portrait of Muley al-Hassan, the Hafsid king of Tunis (ca. 1528–1550), that bears witness to relations between North Africa, the Habsburgs, and the Ottomans. While Muley al-Hassan appears frequently in the vast literature on Charles V Habsburg, he is overshadowed by the emperor. Here he emerges as a protagonist, a figure whose shifting reputation can be traced well into the seventeenth century. Images of the King of Tunis circulated in broadsheets, ephemeral images made for triumphal entries, manuscripts, tapestry designs, engravings, and books. The ceaseless production of Tunisian imagery allowed Europeans to face their North African counterparts through scenes of battle but also through imaginary encounters and festive cross-dressing. This book shows how portraits of Hafsid rulers challenge assumptions about the absolute divide between Christian and Muslim, sovereign and subject, the familiar and the foreign, and they put a face on the entangled histories of the early modern Mediterranean.

As a mortician, Michael Baumann, a Jew pretending to be Aryan, devised a highly unorthodox surgical procedure that converted Jews to Aryans. This helped more than 400 Jews escape from Vienna to Switzerland. With five other Jews pretending to be Aryan, an elaborate escape and spy network was created. While most of the operations were successful there were some failures. Some died so that others could live. Carefully researched, the story blends fiction with factual history incorporating actual events and people. The novel creates a realistic portrayal of Jewish life and death before and during the Nazi takeover of Austria.

The volume contains entries for paintings in the National gallery that were produced in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by artists from the Netherlands. The entries are arranged alphabetically by artist; a short biography and bibliography for each artist is followed by individual entries on the paintings, each in order of acquisition. The authors address traditional questions of attributes and iconography; in addition, they examine the social, economic, and religious context in which the individual work of art functioned. The volume is also probable the first museum catalogue to include the results of examination by infrared reflectography and dendrochronological analysis.
