This chilling and disturbing memoir tells the story of one of Glasgow's most notorious criminals. In his own words, William Lobban tells how he was born in Exeter Prison to a violent, schizophrenic mother. His upbringing in the East End of Glasgow was just as bleak, and he ended up in care, destined for a life of violence and insecurity. Aged only 15 he masterminded a daring break-in to a Glasgow pub, and many years of armed robberies, dealing class A drugs and gang fights followed. When he wasn't causing mayhem on the streets, Lobban was serving terms in various young offenders' institutions and prisons, where he was involved in some of the most serious prison riots of recent years. In the ...

E.L. Cord was first and foremost a salesman, both of products and of himself. In 1924, after achieving great success as an automobile distributor, Cord became the man with enough talent and panache to lead the Auburn Automobile Company out of its slumber. By 1929, Auburn sales had increased 15-fold and Cord was the head of an empire. His Cord Corporation owned Lycoming Mfg. Co. (engines), Limousine Body Co. and Central Mfg. Co. (auto bodies), Century Airlines, and Duesenberg, among others. Cord's philosophy of automobile design (and salesmanship) might be summed up in two words: Novelty Sells. Though mechanically ordinary, his Auburn models, with outstanding styling and clever paint combinat...

My Disability Story

Nobody is perfect and that is the beauty of life and, crucially, what makes us all so amazingly unique. Just like Tamoye. Being young can be hard enough, but for Tamoye, navigating school and everyday life can be even harder because of her disability – clubfoot, or ‘talipes’ to give it its official name. Due to this, Tamoye finds herself made fun of and sometimes left out by her friends. However, this brave little girl draws inspiration from others with similar differences, and we see Tamoye blossom and gain confidence and understanding of her own condition, whilst learning to accept and, ultimately, prize her own uniqueness. My Disability Story can be used by both early readers and parents wishing to introduce the ideas of body-positivity and inclusivity at a young age. This inspirational tale, written with strong poetic rhythms, will teach young people the importance of valuing who they are in an interactive and memorable way. Children are never too young or too old to learn about the importance of self-love. This powerful and highly personal story can help others on their journey, too!

Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa, and yet it managed to wrest its independence from Portugal back in 1973, at the cost of a long and bitter struggle against seemingly implacable odds. This was a time to be proud of, and there was also a moment about two decades ago, when it looked like a trendsetter for democracy. Since then things have gone seriously wrong, with a collapsing infrastructure, a dilapidated economy and a political stage prone to military coups d’etats. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Guinea-Bissau tells the long and sometimes unpleasant story. However, like all the country historical dictionaries, it tells it several times and in several ways. First, the chronology traces the history of what became Guinea-Bissau, and this over a period of centuries and not just decades. Then the introduction recounts that history again, providing more insight and understanding, and conveys a good idea of how things are going now. The details follow in the dictionary section with entries on important persons, places, institutions, and events among other things. And the bibliography points to further reading.
