Pre-1841 Censuses & Population Listings in the British Isles

"It has long been an article of faith that the census of 1841 was the first British census to list the names of individuals. In nearly 90 pages of text, accompanied by unique notes and references to original documents, Mr. Chapman explodes this myth by describing hundreds of pre-1841 name lists (censuses, poll lists, national surveys, tax lists, parish enumerations, etc.), explaining most of them, as far as possible, in their historical framework. As logic would dictate, the work follows a chronological pattern, and for this new fifth edition the author has appended, in Appendix I, a county-by-county breakdown of the various censuses containing individuals' names with the dates of those censuses; and for completeness, in Appendix II, he has added a list of decennial censuses containing names of individuals from 1801 to 1831. This new fifth edition, completely rewritten, incorporates over 200 additional listings for Ireland, making it a unique chronological account of censuses and enumerations in the British Isles from 1086 to 1841"--Publisher's description.

Primary Mathematics: Teaching for Understanding

"One feature of this book that sets it apart from others is the care that is taken to clarify the authors’ interpretation of the phrase 'teaching for understanding'. Each component of this interpretation – connections, representations, reasoning, communication and misconceptions – is then successfully incorporated as a theme in the subsequent chapters that develop important mathematical topics." Ian Thompson, Visiting Professor at Edge Hill University and Northumbria University, UK This important book aims to support and develop teachers' understanding of the key primary mathematics topics. Researching Local History

How has the place we live in changed, developed, and grown over the centuries? That is the basic question local historians seek to answer. The answer is to be found in the sources of information that previous generations have left us. The records of parish, county, and diocesan administration, of the courts, of the national government, and of private estates, all have something to tell us about the history of the locality we are interested in. So do old newspapers and other publications. All of these sources are readily available, but many have been little used. Local historians come from a wide diversity of backgrounds. But whether you are a student researching a dissertation, a family hist...

Detained in England 1914-1920

On the outbreak of war in August 1914 Britain interned civilian "enemy aliens" including thousands of men of military age with Germanic surnames. Among these were German members of the National Sailors' and Fireman's Union (NSFU) working on British merchant vessels. The NSFU offered to accomodate these men at Pattishall in Northamptonshire. As the war progressed, combatant Prisoners of War, captured by British troops in mainland Europe, were brought to POW Camps opened in Britain to minimise their chances of escaping and re-joining the armies of Germany and her allies. In October 1915 the NSFU handed over to the British Government its facilities at Pattishall, which were developed to hold many thousand German, Austrian, Bulgarian and Turkish POWs over the following four years. In this book Colin Chapman and Richard Moss tell the amazing story of the WW1 POW Camp set in rural Northamptonshire in the heart of England.
